I’m not as invested in Instagram as I used to be. If you’ve been following me on Instagram for awhile, you may have noticed that I’ve stopped doing my weeklyΒ Tip Tuesdays. I’ve also been pretty inactive on my Instagram Stories and haven’t been posting daily.

There are a few reasons why I’ve lost interest in Instagram: mainly it’s the algorithm that changes once you start to figure it out. My engagement has plateaued, and it’s made me absolutely miserable. Obviously numbers aren’t what Instagram’s all about, but they’re still important, especially if you’re working with brands. Another reason is all the people using inorganic methods to gain followers – buying them, doing follow/unfollow, taking part in loop giveaways, etc. It just feels like Instagram is made up of false numbers.

I’m still going to stay active on Instagram, but I definitely don’t have the same drive I had several months ago. I really do want to gain my motivation back, and I think going to Iceland this month will help – just enjoying time spent with Adam (it’ll be our first trip together!) and shooting photos for the fun of it.

Now onto the outfit! I picked up this super cute off-the-shoulder romper (similar here) from Forever 21 last month. It was the last one (probably from a return, it was sold out before) and I was very happy I managed to get it! It’s the perfect piece for a summer date night. I paired it with my white Chucks to make it more casual for daytime, and wore this beautiful necklace gifted to me by Amazon.

  • I’ve felt the same way about instagram. It’s really discouraging to see no growth. Hopefully this won’t last long and people’s unethical methods to gain followers dwindles down.

  • I completely agree, super easy to get lost in the numbers.. it’s pretty defeatingβ€”thanks for sharing about this πŸ™‚ followed you on Instagram ^^ love your feed and will be keeping up with your blog~

    Narhee | Made in Mauve

  • I feel the same way as you do, Instagram literally took a toll on me since last year. It was so bad I was emotionally strained and had to take a long break from it. It is no longer as fun as it used to be for me 5 years ago and I hate that feeling. On another note, that romper is adorable on you! Love how you styled it with sneakers, my fav way of styling tbh πŸ™‚

    • Omg 5 years ago, when aesthetic wasn’t a thing and it was fun just to share things for the heck of it haha. I miss those days! Thanks Tina!! πŸ™‚

  • This post is so important for bloggers! It is so easy to get lost in the numbers.

    Laurel | Laurel Musical

    • Agreed! I’ve been trying not to care too much about numbers esp since I know so many people have bought their followers or done sketchy things to get them. Going on Insta less def helps!

  • I so miss the days when we could just post on instagram, then catch up on our CHRONOLOGICAL feed. I used to see everyone’s post that I follow. It’s so stressful now. I totally understand your feelings on it!

    Molly // Miss Molly Moon

    • Right!!! I used to scroll all the way back to the last photo I liked just to catch up haha.

  • The outfit looks great on you! I’m just starting to post a lot on Instagram. It’s hard work – taking photos and editing them.

    Who Let the Mum Out

    • Thank you! It is a lot of work, but it’s fun!

  • Teresa Desouza

It’s like your reading my mind aha I totally feel the same way. I’ve also stopped posting every day – the passion is just gone. I hope I’ll find a way to get it back though, it used to be my favourite app!

    • It used to be my favourite app as well! I would literally be on it for most of my day :/ Hopefully they go back to the way things were!

  • Rohila

such a good point- I feel like a lot of people who genuinely really enjoyed using Instagram especially as a platform for their work, have started to get really tired and frustrated with it. I wouldn’t be surprised if any time now a new social media platform arised…!

    • I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to trying something new!

  • Erin Nicole Brooks

I love what you’re wearing and I totally understand what you mean! I took a long hiatus and came back recharged and inspired to try new things.

    • Thanks Erin! I’m hoping my trip to Iceland does the same for me!

  • I totally agree that Instagram has changed a lot in some interesting ways. A little break can definitely bring some motivation back. πŸ™‚ Love your outfit too!

  • Amanda K

Instagram has been such a pain in the but, but I just keep pushing along. I really hope they will change the algorithm back. Have fun in Iceland!

    Amanda || http://www.fortheloveofglitter.com

    • Thanks Amanda! I hope they change it back or at least make it better somehow!

  • I totally understand your frustrations with Instagram. I really don’t like the follow/unfollow method that a lot of people are doing.

    • I’m part of a Facebook group where many people talk about doing the follow/unfollow method, and it seems like they don’t care how it affects anyone, they just care about growing their numbers quickly :/

  • Lauren

Aw girl! I totally get it! Sometimes a little break is needed to regain creativity and clarity! And I’m definitely sure that trip to Iceland will help, sounds like so much fun!

  • I feel like I’ve heard from so many people that their engagement has plateaued. It’s happened to me. It’s pretty disheartening.

    • It makes Instagram so much less fun. Even if it’s not about the numbers, it’s nice to know that people are actually seeing your content and enjoying it as much as you are. Hopefully they do something about it soon!

  • Kate

I understand where you’re coming from. I’ve learned to just share what I want and go with the flow. As soon as I start to see my numbers rise, I lose a bunch of followers and have no idea why.

    • It’s so difficult to gain organic followers nowadays thanks to the follow/unfollow method :/

  • Love this outfit! I am so irritated with Instagram. I’ve been struggling for months, and it’s just getting worse and worse. Instagram used to be my favorite, but not so much anymore. No one sees my content, and I can’t see content from people I chose to follow. So what’s the point?

Jenn β”‚ Beauty by Jelly Bean

    • Thank you Jenn! I completely agree. I wish they’d give us the option to view our feeds chronologically!

  • Allison Ellzey

Ugh I hate LOOP giveaways! Why do people still think they are a good idea ?!

    • I think the algorithm is making people become desperate :/ I hear the turnout for loop giveaways isn’t that great anyways, so I don’t see why people even bother to try it out!

  • Ugh Instagram’s algorithm is KILLING me! It’s so frustrating!
I love this outfit though – I actually thought it was a dress at first but I love that it’s a romper!

    • Haha thanks Deb! The algorithm is the absolute worst – I hope Instagram does something about it soon…

  • Beautiful outfit! I totally get you when you talk about Instagram. The follow/unfollow game is crazy now a days. I don’t bother following people unless I find them organically. I took a break and have a queue of posts but I’m not going to bother spending so much time on it.

    • Thanks so much Justine! I also don’t follow people back anymore unless I find them organically or if they engage with my photos often. When I follow people I really enjoy making connections with them – not having them unfollow me immediately after because they just care about the numbers!

  • Jen Enoch

I’ve been feeling the same, the algorithm game is not fun at all! I try to ignore and post whatever I want, but it can be defeating when you know so many others are gaining flowing in (like you said) an inorganic way. It put’s the pressure on for others who truly want to enjoy the process. I’m with ya on this!

    • Omg agreed. It just kills me to see people getting even a thousand likes inorganically when the rest of us are working our butts off to try to maintain our regular numbers!

  • Oh I feel ya girl! Same thing happened to me before I rebranded. I let Instagram really get to me emotionally and I freaked out. I think when you work so hard to figure something out and then everything blows up in your face, it can really crush you. Taking a break and reevaluating my goals and purpose with Instagram (and my blog in general) really helped and I came back to Instagram with a new approach and less expectations. Feeling better about it now!

And yes, Iceland will definitely help!!

    • I’m glad rebranding worked out for you – you’re killing it right now! I think it really made things worse for me when I put out a Tip Tuesday about getting more likes, and my likes plummeted immediately after. I’ll try to work on having less expectations, but it’s so difficult!!

      • I can totally relate to this! I did a little series of Instagram tips on my blog and then after that my account took a hit and yeah…went downhill from there lol. I refused to do another IG related post because I felt like a fraud LOL

  • Love your outfit! I’ve lost interest in Instagram in the last few months with the shadowbanning and everything

    • Thanks so much Amber! It seems that many people have been feeling the same way – I hope Instagram realizes this and fixes it soon!

  • Denay DeGuzman

What an adorable summer outfit – I love it! And I agree about Instagram. I feel your pain. My IG numbers have also plateaued and there are just way too many accounts with fake followers. Right now my focus is on Pinterest and Twitter.

    • Thank you Denay!! I’ve been focusing mostly on Pinterest lately as well – I recently got a Tailwind account and I’ve been loving it!

  • Dannielle Alphonse

Gorgeous outfit and truly understand your hesitation with Instagram. I recently asked myself, ‘if social media wasn’t a part of my life right now what are other ways I would operate?’…Food for thought?!

    • Thanks so much Dannielle! I can’t even answer that question haha… Yikes!

  • amberdawn

Im not a fan of IG either…. it drives me crazy. Super cute outfit though. Love your style!

  • Iceland is gorgeous, I can’t wait to see the photos you take! I think I’m just getting started on Instagram so I spend a lot of effort with it, though I do agree, I hate those follow/unfollow users (my numbers have been increasing slowly, but then they fall a bit again because of this). I don’t really know how to use Pinterest to generate followers and traffic just yet, which is why I’m still sticking to Instagram.

    • Thanks so much Cynthia! I definitely think you should get on the Pinterest train ASAP alongside Instagram – Pinterest is my #1 source of traffic and it’s amazing!

  • I liked Instagram when I first started using it, but as a blogger I don’t enjoy it at all. It was already difficult to post perfect, curated images each and every day but now with the algorithm I feel its impossible to compete with what’s out there. I switched my focus to Twitter and it makes me soooo much happier because it’s more authentic and tweets are still ordered chronologically!

    • TOTALLY agree with you on that – blogging makes it so much more “work” and it feels so much less genuine. It seems like people are starting to be more active on Twitter again!

  • I hear ya on the instagram struggle. It used to be my fav, but now its just depressing! PS this romper is DARLING on you!

    • Thank you Kristen!! I hope Instagram makes some changes soon – I miss the way it used to be!

  • I love this pretty little romper on you πŸ™‚ And I feel the same exact way! My following and engagement has just plateaued and I feel like giving up for now. I’m just going to focus on sharing what I like and I know my little community appreciates it. Hang in there! Can’t wait to see the Iceland photos

    Enclothed Cognition

    • Thanks girl!! I agree with you on that – might as well just share photos for yourself that you like, it’s more fun that way haha.

  • This outfit is so cute and pretty on you, Jessica! The necklace is a really nice touch…I love dainty jewelry. πŸ™‚

Girl, I so feel you on the Instagram front – it can be really frustrating. I’ve started a new approach where I focus less on numbers and more on community, and it’s taken some of the frustration out of it, haha. At the end of the day, we (as bloggers) don’t have any control over social media, so why stress?

    Recharge to Relieve Stress

    • Thank you so much Bria! I’ll take your advice and try to focus more on community – that’s so much more important!

  • thesophiadiaries

Omg, you and your bfs first trip?! Oh that’s going to be so fun!! Have fun! And I agree, but I feel like because I’m doing it to just meet new people, I don’t have the same burden as you πŸ™‚ And also because I am not actively looking for any brand sponsorships, so it’s pretty irrelevant to me <3 I miss you on IG though x But take the break you need to πŸ™‚

    • Haha yesss we’re excited! It’s always fun meeting new people on IG πŸ™‚

  • Amen to everything you said. We barely get on there anymore and just posted yesterday for the first time in a month. I’m totally excited to see your Iceland pics, though, and hope you have an incredible trip!

    • Thank you so much! Hopefully Instagram makes some sort of changes soon – it seems that everyone is unhappy with it right now!

  • Lisa Laker

I signed up for instagram a few months ago but have only been on it once. I have to wonder why we need so many social media accounts!

    • It’s difficult to keep up with so many social media platforms but I think Instagram is probably the most important!

  • I have not created an Instagram for my blog just yet because of some of the issues you are experiencing. Thanks for being honest and taking a breather may be the best thing!

    • I definitely think it’s still worth starting an account anyways!

  • I did notice you stopped Tip Tuesdays and I totally feel you about Instagram, Jess! Just too tiring to keep up with the algorithm that seems to be against us… My likes plummeted too and it does make me sad but I know I shouldn’t take it to heart πŸ™ .

Maybe a little getaway is what you need. Hope to see all those cute photos from Iceland!! πŸ˜€

    • Haha we just have to learn to not take it to heart for now… Hopefully Instagram fixes this mess soon. Thanks so much Teri, there’ll def be many cute photos!! πŸ™‚
