And if you’re not already a Prime member, get a free 30-day trial here for perks like free two-day shipping and Prime Video (which has tons more horror movies you can stream).

I’ll only be including English-speaking horror movies in this list except for the bonus ones, which I’ve labeled. Click on the film titles to watch the trailers and click on the DVDs if you’re interested in purchasing them! I tried to include mostly Prime ones, so you can get free one or two-day shipping and get them by Halloween.

I’ve categorized everything by genre to make it easier, and you can skip to any of them by clicking on one of the genres below!

Thrillers | Supernatural | Monsters & Creatures
Psychological | Horror Comedies | Gory | Fucked Up

1. Get Out (2017)

Chris meets his girlfriend’s parents for the first time as they visit her parents’ home for a weekend getaway, and some disturbing secrets unfold as the weekend progresses. I rarely hear about new theatre movies, but when Get Out was released, I heard about it everywhere. I couldn’t stop thinking about this movie after I watched it, and it’s so worth watching.

2. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

A young FBI cadet is forced to confide in an incarcerated psychopath in order to catch another serial killer who skins his victims. Hannibal Lecter is a scary dude, and I wouldn’t recommend this one if you’re more into thriller than horror. The DVD is only $5 on Amazon!

3. Hidden (2015)

A family of three keep hidden inside a fallout shelter, and try to keep safe from the mysterious threat outside. This movie has one of the biggest twists I’ve ever seen, and it’s great. The DVD is only $5 on Amazon!

Available to stream on Netflix.

4. Don’t Breathe (2016)

A trio of thieves break into a blind veteran’s apartment in search of a major cash settlement he received after the death of his child, and they get more than they bargained for. I thought this movie was going to be terrible before I saw it, but it was actually pretty good. The DVD is $10 and the Blu-Ray is $12!

5. The Good Neighbor (2016)

Two high school kids use surveillance equipment to torment their elderly neighbour, and the situation turns out darker than they expected. I didn’t know anything about The Good Neighbor before watching it, and I was surprised by how good of a thriller it was.

Available to stream on Netflix.

6. Estranged (2015)

January returns home after an accident that leads to memory loss and puts her in a wheelchair, and she slowly begins to remember why she left. This movie is both disturbing and sad, but it’s definitely worth a watch.

Available to stream on Netflix.

7. Frozen (2010)

Three friends get stranded in a ski lift as the ski resort closes for the end of the weekend, and have to figure out how to survive. This movie is the reason why I will not go skiing or snowboarding (even though I’ve always wanted to learn). You can get it for $5 on DVD and $10 on Blu-Ray.

Supernatural Horror Movies

8. The Insidious series (2010, 2013, & 2015)

The Insidious series is my favourite of all-time – it’s just so darn good. I love Chapters 1 and 2 because they’re so well thought-out, and everything makes so much sense in Chapter 2! You can get all three DVDs for only $10 on Amazon.

Chapters 2 & 3 available to stream on Netflix. Chapter 1 available to stream on Shudder.

9. The Forest (2016)

Sara searches for her missing twin sister in a legendary Japanese forest, where she encounters dark and deadly spirits. The most terrifying thing about this movie is that the forest is real! The DVD is $10.

10. The Conjuring series (2013 & 2016)

The Conjuring series is all about the amazing Lorraine and late Ed Warren, paranormal investigators who actually solved these cases in real life. Part 1 is $5 and part 2 is $8.

11. The Sinister series (2012 & 2015)

A desperate writer moves his family into a house where a family was violently murdered, and begins to realize the danger he put them in. I actually haven’t seen Sinister 2 yet, but part one was pretty good. Part one is $10 and part two is $8.

Part one available to stream on Shudder.

12. The Annabelle series (2014 & 2017)

The Annabelle series is about – you guessed it – a creepy doll named Annabelle that’s possessed by an evil spirit. Annabelle: Creation actually precedes Annabelle so I’d recommend watching it first. Part one is $8 on DVD and $10 on Blu-Ray.

Horror Movies with Monsters and Creatures

13. The Descent series (2005 & 2009)

Flesh-eating creatures prey on people who dare to wander into their caves. You can get both movies in a set with the first two Cabin Fever movies for $19, or get the first one on DVD for $5 and the second one for $10.

Part one available to stream on Shudder.

14. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)

A little girl stays with her father and his girlfriend at a mansion they’re restoring, and unknowingly releases evil creatures from the basement. I’ve seen this movie a few times because I really like it, and I wish they’d made a part two! You can get it on DVD for $6.

15. The Mist (2007)

A thick fog filled with creatures encases a town. I totally forgot about this movie until I watched Netlix’s latest series with the same name! You can get it in a DVD set with 1408 for $20.

Train to Busan (2016) is probably the best zombie movie I’ve seen if you’re feeling the undead.

Psychological Horror Movies

16. The Sixth Sense (1999)

A little boy who sees ghosts seeks the care of a child psychologist, and together they uncover devastating truths. The twist ending is my favourite of all-time. I can’t believe I only just watched it a year or two ago – I had to analyze this and Silence of the Lambs (which I also didn’t watch until a year or two ago) for a film course. You can get the DVD for $5 and the Blu-Ray for $10.

Available to stream on Netflix.

17. Gerald’s Game (2017)

In an attempt to spice up their marriage while at their lake house, Jessie’s husband dies of a heart attack, and Jessie has to figure out how to survive. This movie was really good but really dark, and I couldn’t sleep afterwards because I watched it by myself in the dark.

Available to stream on Netflix.

18. Split (2016)

Kevin abducts three teenage girls, who learn they’re dealing with more than one personality. While the movie was good, I wasn’t a fan of the ending. Hopefully it’s redeemed in part two!

19. 1408 (2007)

A successful paranormal writer checks into a haunted hotel room and starts to see things he never imagined could be real. I watched this as a kid and it was terrifying!

20. Would You Rather (2012)

A group of strangers attend a dinner party and get forced into a dark game of “would you rather”. Realistic horror movies really scare me, and this is one of them.

Available to stream on Netflix.

21. The Uninvited (2009)

A young woman returns home from a mental hospital and starts to see ghosts. This is actually a really good film – I’ve seen it a few times!

Available to stream on Prime Video.

Horror Comedies

22. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

A group of friends visit a remote cabin for a little getaway, and weird things start to happen. I loved this movie so much when I first watched it. The twist is just too good! The DVD is $5 and the Blu-Ray is $8.

23. The Babysitter (2017)

A young boy stays up to spy on his hot babysitter, and it turns out she’s part of a satanic cult. It’s a fun watch if you’re looking for something a little more light-hearted!

Available to stream on Netflix.

Gory Horror Movies

24. Havenhurst (2016)

A recovering alcoholic woman takes up residence in an old apartment building where her friend went missing, and she uncovers some pretty dark stuff. I often look up movies on Wikipedia after watching them to find out more, and the building and the story behind it turned out to be real. I couldn’t sleep after this movie because it was so creepy.

Available to stream on Netflix.

25. Evil Dead (2013)

I watched Evil Dead in theatres when it came out, and driving home through a dark road surrounded by trees and no lights was not fun… Both the DVD and Blu-Ray are $8 on Amazon. I also saw the Evil Dead musical here in Toronto a few years ago, and it wasn’t bad. You might be able to catch some of their shows in B.C. and Ontario from now until November.

Available to stream on Netflix.

26. Mirrors (2008)

An ex-cop takes a job as a security guard at the damaged ruins of a department store, and uncovers a supernatural force using mirrors to try to gain entrance into this world. I watched this movie as a kid/teen and it scarred me forever.

27. The Scream series (1996, 1997, 2000, & 2011)

The Scream franchise is definitely one of my favourite horror franchises. You can get parts one to three for only $5 on Amazon, as well as part four for $5! If you feel like being a little more festive, you can get all four movies plus the Scream mask for $50.

Scream 4 available to stream on Netflix. Scream 1 & 2 available to stream on Shudder.

28. Cabin Fever (2002, 2009, 2014, & 2016)

The Cabin Fever movies are about a gross flesh-eating disease, and it gets pretty gory. They were addicting to binge-watch though!

2016 remake available to stream on Netflix. Original Cabin Fever available to stream on Shudder.

Fucked Up Horror Movies

29. The Hostel series (2005, 2007, & 2011)

In all of the Hostel movies, travellers get abducted and tortured in the most brutal ways. This series haunted me for weeks and is the reason why I will only stay in hotels and Airbnbs. Don’t even bother watching part three though, it’s a mess. You can get parts one and two in a set for $15 on Amazon!

Parts one & two available to stream on Shudder.

30. The Saw series (2004-2010)

People get kidnapped and put into traps where they have to escape or die… And it’s pretty gruesome.

31. The V/H/S series (2012 & 2013)

Both of these are anthology films featuring a series of found-footage shorts. V/H/S/2 is definitely creepier than the first one! I haven’t seen the latest one yet.

V/H/S/2 available to stream on Netflix. All three parts available to stream on Shudder.

The Human Centipede series (2009, 2010, & 2015), A Serbian Film (2010), and Dumplings (2004) are all pretty messed up. They’re not great movies in my opinion, but they’re very dark and cringe-worthy.

Have you seen any of these horror movies? What are some of your favourites? Adam and I will be binge-watching some this Halloween, and I’d love to hear any suggestions! Don’t forget to check out Amazon’s Halloween shop for all your Halloween needs! Have a safe and wonderful Halloweekend y’all.

  • Lots of awesome classics! Love the list

  • So I’m a total wuss and I can’t watch scary movies (seriously, I can’t even handle watching American Horror Story show because I get scared haha). I’ve only seen Silence of the Lamb and Sixth Sense and had nightmares for days!

  • Jennifer S

#19 and #29 caught my attention! I’m definitely going to check some of these options out before the end of Halloween. 😀

  • Perfect timing! I was planning to watch a couple scary movies this evening, and now you’ve given me some great ideas to pick from! I’m going to go with two or more from these choices…The Uninvited, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, Insidious, Estranged, and The Good Neighbor.

  • gogirlph.com

Great list! I had a good fright from several of the movies on your list. Being the more recent to my memory, Split, to me is the most vividly scary.

  • Such an awesome list, thanks so much for sharing!

So many great movies! I definitely want to watch Split, so I think I’ll do that this weekend. I’m also binge watching Stranger Things for Halloween 🙂
