Binge-watching TV shows on Netflix Canada is one of my favourite hobbies tbh.
I pretty much always have Netflix on in the background, whether I’m actively watching a series or looking for background noise while I’m working.
A lot of TV shows and series are good, but great ones are the ones that captivate you enough to sit there and divide your full attention to watching them. Ya know? Ya know.
If you’re looking for what to binge-watch on Netflix Canada, you’ll definitely find something on this list featuring some of the best and most binge-worthy shows on the platform.

How does Netflix Canada work?
Netflix Canada plans start from $9.99 a month, and you can stream content across most devices with wifi capabilities, such as your TV, phone, and tablet.
Prices for Netflix Canada:
- Basic plan – $9.99 a month for 1 device
- Standard plan – $16.49 a month for 2 devices
- Premium plan – $20.99 a month for 4 devices
If you have the basic plan, you can only stream Netflix Canada on one device at a time.
If you have the standard or premium plans, you can stream on multiple devices at once, which is ideal for families or friends who share the same account.
How often does Netflix Canada come out with new shows and movies?
Netflix releases new shows and movies on a weekly basis.
They have a lot of older movies and TV shows, more modern ones, as well as their own content labelled as Netflix Originals.
From action movies, to documentary series, to reality TV shows, Netflix dabbles in all sorts of genres for their Netflix Originals.
Their Originals are some of the best shows on the Netflix Canada platform!
Netflix vs. Crave vs. Prime Video
So is Netflix, Crave TV, or Amazon Prime Video more worth subscribing to?
Netflix’s basic plan allows you to watch anything on the platform for just $9.99, and a lot of the content tends to be Netflix Originals or older movies.
Crave is pretty much double the price at $19.99 a month, but it has plenty of blockbuster hits and HBO and Showtime series, which makes it worth it.
Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership, which is $99 annually (or $8.25 a month).
Prime is worth getting just for the free two-day shipping on its own, so Prime Video is a definite perk with no extra fees (unless you add channels).
Overall, both Netflix, Crave, and Prime Video are great for their own reasons, which is why I’m subscribed to all of them!

Best comedy series on Netflix Canada
Beef
If you’re up for some binge-able chaos, watch Beef on Netflix starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.
It’s all about two strangers who get into a road rage incident, which begins to consume their lives.
The comedy-drama series gets more and more chaotic as it goes on, and we really loved watching it.
Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are both incredible in it!

Never Have I Ever
Never Have I Ever is a coming-of-age teen comedy series by Mindy Kaling, and it’s actually inspired by Kaling’s own childhood.
Devi is a first-generation Indian-American teenager with a complicated life.
After a devastating freshman year, Devi tries to pick herself back up for sophomore year but things just keep getting more and more complicated.
It’s absolutely hilarious – I binge watched the first season all in one day and laughed out loud so many times.
Oh, and the lead actress is from Mississauga, which is pretty awesome!
If you enjoy Never Have I Ever, you’ll definitely enjoy Mindy Kaling’s The Sex Lives of College Girls on Crave, which is about a group of college freshmen and roommates and their frisky adventures.

Workin’ Moms
I’m not a mom, but I’m definitely a huge fan of Workin’ Moms.
It’s an excellent and well-written comedy series by Catherine Reitman, who also stars as one of the main characters (and is married to her husband in the series in real life!)
It focuses on the lives of several different working moms and how they navigate through motherhood and their careers.
It’s a CBC show and it’s based in Toronto (whoop, whoop) so it’s always cool hearing references to familiar places.
You might be able to spot some recognizable places like Oretta, an Italian restaurant in Toronto that’s also one of the most Instagram-worthy restaurants in Toronto!

Orange is the New Black
Orange is the New Black is very loosely based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of her experience in a women’s prison.
The protagonist, Piper Chapman, is sentenced to prison for transporting drug money 10 years before.
While Piper is the main character, you really start to fall in love with all the other characters and their backstories.
Honestly, I started liking all the characters and hating Piper lmao.
OITNB was created by Jenji Kohan, who also created Weeds (one of my all-time fave shows), which is part of why it’s so great.
While the show was really good in its beginning seasons, I do think it was a bit overstretched.

Best romance series on Netflix Canada
Crash Landing on You
Crash Landing on You is one of the most successful Korean dramas of all-time.
The series is about a South Korean heiress and CEO who accidentally paraglides her way into North Korea.
It’s a love story that has its teary and heartfelt moments.
The production team was advised by actual North Korean defectors for the show, so it’s the closest portrayal to actual life in North Korea out there in the media.

One Day
One Day is an emotional series following the 20-year relationship of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who meet at a graduation ball after graduating from the University of Edinburgh.
Every episode is centred around what happens on July 15th of each year, with each episode being a different year (or multiple years).
While I didn’t find the main characters likeable, I really enjoyed the series, and I think I binge-watched it in two days.
Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall are also both incredible actors!

Best drama series on Netflix Canada
The Crown
The Crown is based on an award-winning play chronicling the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the late 1940s to the early 21st century.
It starts off shortly before her marriage to Philip Mountbatten, and ends with the wedding of her eldest son, Prince Charles, and Camilla.
Matt Smith from Doctor Who and House of the Dragon (on Crave) also stars in The Crown!
The show has actually won two Golden Globes, and it’s an incredible series.

This Is Us
This Is Us centres around the Pearson family, as three very different siblings try to overcome a tragedy from their past.
Honestly, I wasn’t super into the show at first, but as the seasons went on I couldn’t stop binge-watching it.
It’s a very powerful show that shows different family and romantic relationships.
If you’re a crier, expect to have lots of ugly sobs.
I’m honestly not a fan of the latest season because it’s a little too close to home – it’s centred on how the Pearsons navigate life in the pandemic.

Breaking Bad
After Walter White, a chemistry teacher, discovers he has cancer, he decides to get into the meth-making business to help his family pay his medical bills.
When he partners with a former student of his, Jesse Pinkman, things turn different than he expected.
Breaking Bad is one of the best TV series out there – Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are great together!
Better Call Saul is a spinoff series with 5 seasons, and there’s also a spinoff movie called El Camino.

The Sinner
The Sinner is an anthology crime series about Detective Harry Ambrose and the disturbing cases he investigates.
Each season focuses on a different crime case that Harry investigates, which is pretty unique.
Jessica Biel is absolutely incredible in season one, which I definitely enjoyed more than seasons two and three.

Ozark
Ozark is an absolutely incredible series, and probably in my top 10 favourite TV shows of all-time.
It’s about a man (Jason Bateman) who moves his family from Chicago to the Ozarks summer resort community.
The reason isn’t for a fresh start or a nicer view: it’s to launder money for a Mexican drug lord.
Jason Bateman is one of my favourite actors, and it’s really cool seeing him play such a different role from his usual.
Julia Garner is also absolutely incredible in this series!

Itaewon Class
Itaewon Class is probably my most favourite Korean drama of all-time.
Ex-con Park Sae-Ro-Yi fights to make his dreams a reality with the help of his friends.
This series is intense, exciting, emotional, and inspiring – it’s definitely worth the hype.
The soundtrack is also really good – I have it downloaded on Spotify 😉
There is no English dub, so you’ll have to read subtitles, but it’s totally worth it!

Extracurricular
A gifted high school student turns to a life of crime to help pay for college.
If you liked the Netflix series Baby (I liked it until I found out it was based on true events), you’ll definitely like Extracurricular (which is purely fictional).
Extracurricular is another South Korean series, so you’ll have to read subtitles or watch it dubbed!
The actor who plays the main character, Dong-Hee Kim, also stars in Itaewon Class.

D.P. (2021)
Soon after starting mandatory military service in South Korea, a young private becomes a D.P. (Deserter Pursuit), hunting down army deserters and bringing them back.
The series is set in 2014, which apparently was a time where a lot of dark things were coming out about military life (according to Reddit).
A heavy theme in this Korean drama is bullying and hazing, and it is incredibly heartbreaking to watch knowing that this stuff actually happens.
Apparently the South Korean military started allowing soldiers to have cellphones sometime in 2019 or 2020, so bullying isn’t as bad as it used to be, which I guess is also why the series is set in 2014 and not today.
I had no expectations going into D.P. and it was such a fantastic drama series – everything from the writing, to the casting, to the cinematography was so on point.
Both season 1 and 2 only have 6 episodes each, but so much happens in each episode that it doesn’t feel that short.

Sanctuary (2023)
A tough, desperate, and cocky teenager becomes a sumo wrestler in search of fame and money, all while upsetting an industry steeped in tradition.
I wasn’t super into the show at first, but I quickly became hooked after the first few episodes.
It’s a very well-written and emotional series, and it also had a really good balance of comedy.
It also had some anime-inspired elements, like fan service lol, which was really funny!

Anatomy of a Scandal
Sophie Whitehouse is the wife of a British MP, and their entire lives get blown up when it gets discovered that he’s had an affair with an aide.
Anatomy of a Scandal is dubbed as an anthology series, so it seems like every season will be about different scandals and different people!

The Queen’s Gambit
Orphan and chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction on her way to become the greatest chess player in the world.
The Queen’s Gambit blew up on Netflix, and I actually had to give it a second chance to get into it.
Yes, it’s a series about chess, but it’s not just about chess.
It actually took 30 years for the producer to finally get this series made – no studios thought anyone would want to watch a show about chess!

When They See Us
When They See Us is a limited series based on true events that happened in 1989.
It tells the story of the Central Park Five, who were wrongfully convicted of assaulting a jogger in Central Park.
They were exonerated 13 years later, and it is absolutely heartbreaking to watch the five kids turn into men while in prison.
It’s one of the most powerful series to watch on Netflix, and it’s one of those shows where you actually need to sit down and watch it.

Unorthodox
I learned about Hasidic Jews while in Israel, and watching Unorthodox was very powerful and emotional.
A Hasidic Jewish woman flees her arranged marriage and religious life in Brooklyn for freedom and a new life in Germany, but her past catches up to her.
It’s partly inspired by Deborah Feldman’s book about her own life, but a lot of the show is actually fictionalized.
I binge-watched the entire series in one sitting – it’s only four episodes!

Vikings
Farmer, family man, and viking Ragnar Lothbrok seeks to head west to discover and conquer new lands.
Ragnar Lothbrok was actually a real viking legend, and the historical drama is loosely based on his adventures.
My family recommended Vikings to me, and I literally binge-watched it all throughout the holidays.
It’s kind of got Game of Thrones vibes, but with vikings instead.
It’s a Canadian-Irish co-production and it’s filmed in Ireland, which is pretty cool!
There are 6 seasons of the series, but only 5 are on Netflix.
Funnily enough, it was only meant to be one season originally, but they kept making it because of how successful the show was!
There’s also a Netflix spinoff called Vikings: Valhalla, though I personally haven’t seen it yet!

Outlander
After serving as a nurse in the British army, Claire Randall goes on a second honeymoon in Scotland with her husband Frank before he starts a new career as a historian.
She suddenly gets transported 200 years into the past, marries Scottish man Jamie Fraser to keep herself safe, and ends up falling in love.
Outlander is a historical drama based on a novel series of the same name, which happens to be one of the best-selling book series of all-time!

You
You makes you want to private all your social media accounts and never talk to strangers ever again.
Joe Goldberg is a creepy dude who will do anything to get close to the women he falls in love (*ahem* becomes obsessed) with, even if it literally means getting rid of the people around her.
A lot of people compare Joe to Dexter, but they ain’t anything alike.
If you enjoy the show, you should definitely listen to Penn Badgley’s episode on Dua Lipa’s podcast, At Your Service – it’s really interesting!

Into the Night
After the sun mysteriously starts killing everything it touches, a group of passengers on a plane travels west to try to find somewhere safe.
All the passengers have different backgrounds and life stories, and we do get a peek behind some characters’ pasts.
There are two seasons of the show with 6 episodes each, and fun fact: Into the Night is actually the first Belgian series on Netflix!

Best action & adventure series on Netflix Canada
My Name (2021)
After her father is murdered, a young girl puts her trust in a crime boss to get revenge against her father’s killer.
My Name is action-packed and quite bloody, and it kinda reminds me of John Wick and The Punisher.
Han So Hee from Nevertheless stars as the lead in this Korean drama, and it’s so interesting seeing her in a completely different role (and killing it)!

Outer Banks (2020-2023)
16-year-old John B. and his three best friends are on the hunt for a legendary treasure that his missing father spent 20 years searching for.
I started watching the show on Netflix not knowing what it was about and thought it was meh, but then it started to get really exciting.
Every episode of Outer Banks is super intense, and you’ll have feelings between wanting to see what happens next and not wanting to see what happens next.
Another big part of the storyline is this whole “Pogues” vs. “Kooks” thing, which is basically the working class vs. the wealthy living in the OBX.
As John B. puts it, “you either have two jobs or two houses”.
Adam and I really enjoyed season 1, but the seasons afterwards are a little too cheesy and unrealistic for us.

Best crime & thriller series on Netflix Canada
Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area (2022)
I’d been meaning to watch the original Spanish Money Heist for a long time, and of course I binged this Korean remake as soon as it was released.
It’s set in the near future in a unified Korea, where a group of specialized thieves overtake the mint and stand off against the police.
The cast is incredible, and Park Hae-soo from Squid Game stars in it.
There’s no confirmation yet on whether there’ll be a season two or not, but I really hope there is!

The Glory (2022)
After suffering through horrific bullying and school violence, a young woman spends the next 18 years plotting her revenge against those who abused her.
Song Hye-kyo (Descendants of the Sun) and Lim Ji-yeon (Seoul in Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area) star in The Glory, and they are both absolutely terrifying.
Adam and I binge-watched the series as soon as it came out, and it’s definitely one of our favourite K-dramas.

Best fantasy series on Netflix Canada
Stranger Things
Set in the 80s, Stranger Things is about a small town that encounters the supernatural.
It’s hard to say much without spoiling it, but you don’t really know what’s going on until later on in the first season.
I wasn’t fan of the first season, but the show actually got really good over time.
The show was created by the Duffer brothers, who also wrote the horror film Hidden!
Season 5 is rumoured to be coming out in 2025, so we’ll probably have to wait awhile for it.

Dark
I also can’t tell you much about Dark without spoiling it, but it’s about a small German town where kids go missing and supernatural things begin to happen.
The show starts off slow, but as secrets start to unravel and twists reveal themselves, it gets pretty mind-blowing.
If you like Stranger Things, you’ll like Dark!
It’s a German series and they speak German in it, but you can watch it dubbed in English.

Shadow and Bone
Sinister forces plot against a young soldier named Alina Starkov after she reveals a magical power that may unite her world.
Shadow and Bone is based on the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo!
Ben Barnes from The Punisher stars in the series, and it’s worth watching just for him 😉

Best sci-fi series on Netflix Canada
Black Mirror
There’s a reason why everyone talks about Black Mirror each time a new season drops: it’s the kind of show that makes you think.
Black Mirror is one of those shows that leaves you feeling uneasy and uncomfortable, but that’s the appeal of it.
You don’t even have to watch the series in order for it to make sense as it’s an anthology, but there are plenty of easter eggs that connect the episodes to one another.
My favourite episodes are “San Junipero”, “Hang the DJ”, and “Striking Vipers”, all of which happen to be the few feel-good episodes of the show.
Bandersnatch is also in the Black Mirror universe, and the cool thing about it is that it’s sort of like a choose-your-own-adventure movie!
If you like Black Mirror, you might also enjoy Love Death + Robots, an anthology animation series that you do not want to watch with your kids, or even your parents.

Alice in Borderland
Arisu and his friends find themselves in an abandoned Tokyo, where they have to play dangerous games in order to survive.
Alice in Borderland is a Japanese Netflix series, and it’s super unique – it’s actually based on a manga of the same name!
Adam and I binge-watched both seasons each time they came out, and I actually liked season two even more than the first!

Best horror series on Netflix Canada
The Haunting of Hill House
I think The Haunting of Hill House is one of the most well-made horror series of all-time, and one of the best horror shows on Netflix Canada.
It’s a modern retelling of a Shirley Jackson novel by the same name, and it tells the story of a family who grew up in the haunted Hill House, and has to go back to face the ghosts of their past.
It’s filled with jaw-dropping, heartbreaking, and beautiful moments.
Even as someone who’s watched terrifying horror films all her life, Hill House gave me chills to the point where I always had to watch happy videos before going to bed at night.
The Haunting of Bly Manor is a sort of season 2 of Hill House, but it’s listed separately on Netflix, and the storyline is completely different.
In Bly Manor, a young governess takes on a job at Bly Manor and begins to see strange things.
A lot of the actors from Hill House reappear as different characters in Bly Manor, which is really cool – sort of like American Horror Story.
I personally liked Hill House more because it was scarier, but Bly Manor is also really good!

Squid Game
Squid Game is actually the most-watched Netflix series of all-time, and it’s one of my favourite Korean shows on Netflix.
It’s about a group of people who compete in games against each other for a chance to win a large grand prize.
While it’s not scary, it’s got some pretty gory scenes!
They’ve also renewed it for season 2, which I guess makes up for the ending that I personally wasn’t a fan of.

The Walking Dead
If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what The Walking Dead is, it’s about a group of survivors who try to find safety during the zombie apocalypse.
While the repetitive storylines are getting old, I still think The Walking Dead is one of the best series on television.
Not many popular TV shows make it to 10 seasons, and you can watch the 11th season on Prime Video!
There are even two spinoff shows called Fear the Walking Dead (starts off good and becomes terrible) and World Beyond (terrible) on Prime Video.

Kingdom
There are endless zombie films and TV series out there, but if we’re being honest, most of them are bleh.
Kingdom is a South Korean TV series set in ancient Korea, and it’ll have you clutching your blanket over your face.
In Kingdom, a mysterious plague makes its way through the kingdom while the crown prince tries to save his people.
Oh, and the zombies run fast, which is my worst nightmare when it comes to zombie shows.
It’s the first Korean Netflix Original series, and it’s definitely one of the top horror shows on Netflix Canada.
There’s also a movie in the same universe called Kingdom: Ashin of the North, which serves as a prequel to the whole series.

Sweet Home
As humans turn into monsters, a troubled teen and his neighbours fight them off and try to survive.
With all the zombie movies out there, Sweet Home is an interesting and different take on the whole creature/monster genre!
People turning into zombies does seem more realistic (lol) than people turning into monsters that represent your desires, but the show is still a good watch.
Song Kang from Nevertheless stars as the lead character!
I thought the show was really good the first time I watched it, but I liked it even more after re-watching it.
Season two also came out recently, and I already can’t wait for season three!
The show is also in Korean, but you can dub it in English.

Best reality TV series on Netflix Canada
Terrace House
I don’t know what it is that makes Terrace House such an addictive TV show to watch.
It’s basically a Japanese reality series about six strangers (three women, three men) who live in the same house together to date each other and make friends.
What makes the show unique is that there’s a panel who commentates on the housemates and their actions.
It’s really fun seeing Japanese culture, and it’s interesting when you see how different the housemates are in the Aloha State season based in Hawaii!
Fun fact: Adam and I actually went to Hawaii because of Terrace House.
The first season and film are not on Netflix, but I think the first season is definitely the best out of the entire show.

Queer Eye is one of the most wholesome and wonderful reality shows on television.
The Fab Five travel around the US to help people learn to love and become their best selves.
They even have an additional seasons where they travel to Japan to do the same thing, and there are Brazil and Germany spinoffs also on Netflix!
If you want to feel good and cry happy tears, this is the show to watch.
Another show with similar vibes is Restaurants on the Edge, except they makeover restaurants instead of people!

Love is Blind
Is love blind? That’s the whole premise behind this Netflix reality series.
Singles go on “dates” with each other while sitting in individual pods, and it’s basically a social experiment to see if people call fall in love before seeing each other face-to-face.
Vanessa Lachey and (obviously) Nick Lachey host Love is Blind.
I was literally hooked to this show when it first came out, and they also have Brazilian, Japanese, and Swedish versions out.
Honestly, the Japanese version is probably the best one, and two couples from the show have announced they’re having babies!
Ultimatum is another Netflix dating reality show hosted by Vanessa and Nick Lachey where couples see if they really want to be together, and it’s a total hot mess.
Dating Around and Too Hot to Handle are two other similar shows on Netflix, as well as Temptation Island, Fboy Island, and 12 Dates of Christmas on Crave Canada.

Next in Fashion
While Alexa Chung and Tan France may be one of the main reasons to watch Next in Fashion, the designers are the stars of the show.
Fashion designers from all around the world compete to become “next in fashion”.
It’s amazing seeing the talent of all these people, especially since most of them are already established.
Charles was my favourite designer – I loved every single one of his pieces, plus he’s from Ontario!
The show first came out in 2020, and they finally came out with season 2 in 2023!

The Final Table
If you’re a fan of cooking shows, The Final Table is epic.
The chefs on the show are already accomplished, with some even having Michelin Stars, and they compete to sit at the final table with other accomplished chefs.
Each episode focuses on a different country, and they bring on food critics, celebrities, and the best chef from each country to judge the creations.
I’ve already put together a list of some restaurants I’d like to visit during my travels, including Shokunin in Calgary!
I really wish they’d continued on with the show, but it was cancelled after one season.

BoJack Horseman
I was never one for adult cartoons until BoJack came along.
BoJack Horseman was the first animated series by Netflix, and it’s about a washed up actor who back in the 90s was in a very famous TV show.
He tries to make a comeback into Hollywood (which later becomes Hollywoo, and then Hollywoob) two decades later, and we get to see all the shenanigans him and his friends go through.
Oh, and Bojack is a horse, and he’s got friends who are cats, dogs, and humans.
The show gets progressively more depressing and hard to watch over the seasons, but overall it’s a a witty and entertaining show.
I loved BoJack so much I even wrote my own script for an episode as an assignment for my university “writing for animation” course.
It’s most definitely one of the best shows on Netflix Canada, even if you’re not typically a fan of cartoons or animations.

Big Mouth
Big Mouth is another adult animated Netflix series all about the joys of puberty and growing up in middle school.
As soon as a kid starts going through puberty, they get a hormone monster to help them get through it.
“Help” probably isn’t the best word, but you get the idea.
The Netflix series is actually inspired by the childhoods of creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, who were childhood best friends in the suburbs of New York.
Even the main characters are named after them!
It’s hilarious and definitely not made for middle school kids, and you maybe won’t want to watch it around your own parents either.
I really liked the show when it first came out, but it does start to get kinda creepy as the seasons go on.

F is for Family
F is for Family is another Netflix Original adult animated series, and it’s inspired by stand-up comedian Bill Burr’s life growing up in the 70’s.
He also voices the main character of Frank Murphy, a veteran and suburban father with a dysfunctional but loving family.
The show can get a little dark at times, but it has its heartwarming and hilarious moments.
It’s probably my favourite out of all of Netflix’s adult animated series, and it’s definitely worth watching!

Obviously there are tons more great and binge-worthy shows and series on Canadian Netflix, but these were my personal favourites to binge-watch.
