Why I’ve Lost Interest in Social Media

Lost interest in social media and trying to get back into it?

I know that many of us especially have a love-hate relationship with social media for so many different reasons.

Whether it’s the ever-changing and confusing algorithms, or the constant comparison game, it’s not always fun to be on social media.

Do you remember what social media was like when it first started getting popular?

I remember reblogging things that made me laugh on Tumblr back in 2010.

I remember sharing my bad quality mirror #OOTDs and over-filtered food photos back in 2012 just for the fun of it.

And I remember back in 2014 when I started becoming more interested in and sharing actual photography on Instagram.

As a full-time content creator, social media is a huge part of my entire business, and things are totally different than the way they used to be.

More often than not, I post because I feel like I have to rather than actually just posting because I feel like it.

In all honesty, I feel like having social media as my full-time job made me lose my creativity.

If you’re also struggling with having lost interest in social media, here are some tips to help you get back into it!

How to get back into social media if you’ve lost interest

1. Stop worrying too much about numbers

If you lose a few followers, don’t stress too much about it.

If a photo doesn’t get as many likes as you anticipated it would, just let it be.

Numbers are important on Instagram, especially if it’s your job, but you shouldn’t be obsessive over them.

2. Follow accounts that inspire you

The easiest way to be re-inspired if you’ve lost your creativity?

To find and follow people who inspire you.

Go on the Instagram explore page or look under some hashtags to find some fresh new accounts to follow.

3. Shoot content for fun

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses, ya know?

Shoot photos just for the fun of it, not because you have to or because you need Instagram content.

Before I started blogging, I took pretty photos with my iPhone, filtered the heck out of them, and posted them on Instagram just because I felt like it.

Even if photos weren’t what you’d call ~Instagram-worthy~, I still posted them if I felt like it.

I miss those days, and I’ve been trying to get back into doing that.

4. Don’t feel like you have to post everyday

Yes, posting daily will probably help you gain new Instagram followers quicker.

No, you shouldn’t be doing it if it’s giving you burnout.

Just post whenever you feel like it!

5. Do less branded posts

This one specifically applies to bloggers and influencers.

Sponsored posts take a lot of work, and when it becomes work, it becomes less fun.

Don’t take every sponsored opportunity that’s offered to you, and only accept the ones you’re truly excited about.

Otherwise, shooting, editing, and writing is going to feel like a complete chore.

Not to mention that you should only be promoting stuff you actually would purchase yourself!

Anyway, when hobbies become work, it ends up not being fun anymore.

6. Engage with your community

Social media is all about community and engagement – make friends and build relationships!

This is what makes being on social media truly fun.

And don’t fake it either – people can tell when you’re not being genuine and just fishing for comments on your own photos.

7. Take a break

If you just can’t deal with Instagram anymore, consider taking a little break.

I’ve taken breaks as short as a few days, and I’ve seen people take breaks as long as several months.

Take the time you need to feel inspired again, follow points 1 through 6, then hopefully you’ll be able to fall back in love with social media!
