7 Sweaters You Need in Your Capsule Wardrobe

7 Sweaters You Need in Your Capsule Wardrobe

Growing up with cold weather for most of the year means sweaters are absolutely necessary in my capsule wardrobe.

Fall, winter, spring – the only season in Canada where sweaters aren’t necessary is summer.

Toronto has been so darn cold lately, and it’s been so hard to wear anything but sweaters and jeans.

In fact, it’s been so hard to even leave the house, and I’ve been hibernating for the last 3 days.

If I could hibernate all throughout the cold winter, I would, but unfortunately I’ll have to go outside eventually (aka tomorrow).

Today I’m sharing with y’all a few of my fave sweaters at the moment, perfect for adding to your capsule wardrobe!

Be sure to also follow me on Instagram and TikTok – I share a lot more content on those platforms that don’t make it to the blog!

Capsule wardrobe sweaters

Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto
Cardigan: Aritzia | Pants: Zara (similar from Free People) | Booties: MUJI (similar from La Canadienne)

Cardigan

I love how versatile cardigans are: they can be worn buttoned up as a top on their own, or unbuttoned and worn as a layer.

I’m wearing a cropped Aritzia cardigan I thrifted from Common Sort (an amazing consignment store in Toronto).

I paired my cropped cardigan with a pair of high-waisted plaid trousers from Zara (similar from Free People) and some MUJI chelsea boots (similar from La Canadienne, an amazing Canadian shoe brand).

Sweater: Everlane (gifted) | Denim: Citizens of Humanity

Crewneck sweater

This basic alpaca crewneck sweater from Everlane is probably my most-worn sweater in my wardrobe, just because it’s so easy to throw on and looks chic paired with everything.

The neutral colour and classic fit allows it to pair with anything in your capsule wardrobe, from jeans (mine are from Citizens of Humanity) to pleated skirts!

I mostly just pair it with jeans because 1. I’m lazy and 2. it’s way too cold to plan out actual outfits.

But hey, it looks chic even just worn with jeans!

Sweater: Lankun (gifted, similar from Reformation) | Pants: Zara (similar from Free People)

Oversized sweater

Ain’t nothin’ cozier during the colder months than throwing on a comfy oversized sweater.

Pair them with a good pair of jeans, or throw them on over a comfy pair of leggings.

I’m wearing an old sweater from a Vancouver-based brand called Lankun (which no longer exists), and you can find a similar mustard sweater from Reformation.

I tucked my oversized sweater into these high-waisted plaid trousers from Zara (similar from Free People).

Sweater: UNIQLO | Pants: Zara (similar from Free People)

Ribbed turtleneck

I literally live in turtlenecks during the fall and winter, and I think they’re an absolute essential in every Canadian girl’s closet.

Ribbed turtlenecks are perfect for your fall capsule wardrobe and winter capsule wardrobe, and they pretty much go with any and every pair of bottoms.

Since they’re more fitted, you can layer them under so many different outfits, and they give you that extra bit of warmth!

This ribbed turtleneck from UNIQLO is decently priced, warm, and great quality.

If I were to only have one turtleneck, I’d definitely go with a neutral colour, but red also never goes out of style and is perfect for the holiday season!

I styled my turtleneck with a pair of plaid trousers from Zara (similar from Free People).

Sweater: Aritzia (similar from Free People) | Denim: MINKPINK (similar from Levi’s) | Booties: Aldo (gifted, similar from Marc Fisher)

Oversized turtleneck

I’ve actually had this oversized wool turtleneck from Aritzia (similar from Free People) for awhile, which just shows how much of a classic and timeless piece it is.

I got it when Drake’s “Hotline Bling” music video came out, and Adam called it my Drake sweater lol.

You can wear it untucked over some black leggings (it’s all about COMFORT, ma dude), or tuck it into some jeans (similar from Levi’s) like I did here.

I wore these red booties from Aldo (similar from Marc Fisher) for a little pop of colour.

Half-zip sweater

Half-zip sweaters are sort of a newer trend, but they’re definitely a capsule wardrobe item that can be worn for years to come.

I love this half-zip mockneck sweater from Canadian sustainable brand Frank and Oak.

They can easily be worn with leggings or jeans!

Sweatshirt

With all this stay-at-home business, I think we’ve all become accustomed to cozy loungewear.

I mean, I ain’t complaining about loungewear being socially acceptable to wear outside.

I’m wearing an old sweatshirt from Everlane (made with discarded plastic bottles!)

Wear your sweatshirt with sweatpants on lazy days or throw on jeans for a more put-together look.
