Markham’s Main Street Unionville has plenty of fun things to see and do, no matter what kind of activities you’re into.
I absolutely love exploring this neighbourhood – it’s one of my favourite things to do every summer!

Best things to do in Main Street Unionville
Shop at the boutiques along Main Street Unionville
Most people visit Main Street Unionville for the food, but there are actually quite a few shops and boutiques here worth checking out.
Stop into Tucci Armadio for contemporary women’s clothing, What Girls Want for shapewear and lingerie, or Susannah Designer Consignment for vintage and preloved clothing and accessories.
There’s also an annual shopping event called “Ladies Night on Main”, where you can enjoy entertainment, specials, and promotions at local businesses in the neighbourhood.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, pay a visit to Old Firehall Confectionery for their extensive range of sweets, treats, and confections.
Get crafty at Crock A Doodle
Paint your own pottery at this little shop in the heart of Main Street Unionville.
You can paint everything from mugs, to plates, to piggy banks, and it’s so much fun getting creative.
You simply select a piece of blank pottery on the shelf, and the price listed on it includes the studio time, paints, glazing, and kiln-firing.
They’re open every single day from noon until 9 PM, and it does get quite busy, so book reservations ahead of time!
It’s a super cute date idea if you’re looking for something fun to do with a partner.

Check out an exhibition at the Varley Art Gallery
The Varley Art Gallery in Main Street Unionville is named after one of the Group of Seven artists, Frederick Varley.
The gallery space is actually larger than it looks from the outside of the building, and they’ve got some cool exhibitions and works in their permanent collection.
Right now, they have a really cool featured exhibition called “Longing Belonging, 100 Years 100 Stories”, which tackles Canada’s troubled colonialist history by marking the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Admission to the gallery is free, but they do accept donations!

Snap photos of the Victorian-era architecture
Historic Main Street Unionville was founded in 1794, and a lot of the original buildings here remain from that time period.
Take a walk down Main Street Unionville and admire all the gorgeous and historical 1800s architecture!
There are plenty of Instagrammable spots for ya to snap some cute photos.
I love that they also decorate some spots with flowers for spring and summer, as well as holiday lights during the winter months!
Dine at one of the many restaurants in Main Street Unionville
Main Street Unionville has tons of incredible restaurants and food spots worth visiting, whether you’re in the mood for Chinese skewers or authentic Italian dishes.
Enjoy modern and seasonal Canadian cuisine at NextDoor Restaurant, Asian fusion dishes at Inspire Restaurant, or modern Indian cuisine at Ambiyan Indian Restaurant.
You can also visit more casual spots like Calabria Bakery for Italian eats or Espresso 21 for brunch and sandwiches.
If you’re in the mood to try a bunch of different things, you can even do a little food hop and visit multiple restaurants and food spots!
Enjoy a bubble tea break
Markham is well-known for its plethora of incredible Asian restaurants and food spots, and there’s no shortage of amazing bubble tea spots.
Main Street Unionville also has a great selection of bubble tea spots, perfect for a quick bubble tea break!
Stop into The Alley for one of their Instagram-worthy drinks, Presotea for their classic bubble teas, or Real Fruit Bubble Tea for their tasty fruit drinks.
And if you’re more in the mood for a coffee or matcha break, stop into PawStory Cafe or Espresso 21 instead.
Grab a scoop of ice cream
You can’t visit Main Street Unionville during the summer months without getting a scoop or two of ice cream.
If you walk around Main Street Unionville on a beautiful, sunny day, you’ll walk past dozens of people enjoying the sweet, cold treat.
There are plenty of amazing dessert shops where you can grab ice cream, whether you’re in the mood for a classic flavour or something more unique.
iHalo Krunch is a popular Toronto ice cream shop known for their Asian-inspired soft serve flavours, including their coconut-flavoured charcoal, ube, and matcha.
You can enjoy it at Espresso 21, a super cute café in Main Street Unionville that also offers up cheesecakes from The Cheesecake Factory.
Boréal Gâteau & Creamery is known for their handcrafted ice cream cakes, but you can also just grab a scoop of one of their Asian-inspired ice cream flavours like Salted Egg Yolk and Miso Caramel.
And if you’re in the mood for something more classic, Old Firehall Confectionery serves up a variety of hard ice cream scoops from Kawartha Dairy.
Go for a stroll around Toogood Pond Park
Toogood Pond Park is one of the nicest parks in Markham, and you can take a leisurely stroll around the pond that sits here.
The scenic walking trail features forest, boardwalks, and pretty pond views.
It’s a pretty trail to walk on year-round, but it’s really lovely during the summer months with all the greenery on the trees.
There’s a parking lot specifically for the park, or you can park in Main Street Unionville and walk over.

Attend the annual Unionville Festival
From live musical performances, to sustainable shopping, to interactive activities, there’s plenty to do at the annual Unionville Festival.
They’ll even have an outdoor yoga class, a rubber duck race at Toogood Pond, and pet contests where you can bring your own doggo to compete.
It’s happening this year from June 3rd to June 4th, 2023!
Enjoy one of the many free events at Main Street Unionville
Summer is the best time to visit Markham’s Main Street Unionville, as so many free events happen during this time of year!
Stop into free outdoor movie screenings on select Tuesdays, zumba classes every Wednesday, outdoor yoga classes every Sunday, and live music every weekend.
There’s also a free Historic Unionville walking tour happening on Father’s Day (June 18th from 10 to 11 AM), and you’ll have to email [email protected] to reserve your spot.
