How does Crave Canada work?

What’s included in Crave?

The basic plan for Crave Canada is $9.99, but you’re going to want to upgrade to the Movies + HBO add-on to get all the good shows and movies.

With just the basic plan, you can only watch certain shows.

The Movies + HBO add-on is an additional $9.99, which is a total of $19.98 a month.

With the add-on, it’s more expensive than other streaming services, but it’s definitely worth it for the extra movies and HBO shows.

They still have some HBO shows and episodes on the basic plan, but you won’t get things like the later seasons of Game of Thrones.

How many devices can you have on Crave?

You can have up to 5 devices registered to your Crave account, but only two people can watch at the same time on different devices.

You can watch on up to three devices if you have the maxTV set-top box!

Prices for Crave Canada:
  • Basic plan – $9.99 a month
  • Movies + HBO add-on – $9.99 a month
  • Starz add-on – $5.99 a month
  • Super Écran add-on – $9.99 a month

You can also prepay for your Crave subscription and get 2 months free.

Comedy

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

A college grad aspiring to be a journalist becomes an assistant to Miranda Priestly, one of New York City’s biggest magazine editors.

The Devil Wears Prada is a classic rom-com that never gets old, and I think I love it more watching it as an adult!

Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci all star in The Devil Wears Prada.

Eighth Grade (2018)

Kayla is a shy and introverted eighth grader who posts videos about self-confidence online.

The coming-of-age movie was written and directed by Bo Burnham, a comedian who you might recognize from YouTube!

He casted actual eighth graders for the film, and he actually found the lead actress on YouTube while researching about teenagers for the film.

Eight Grade is totally not something for kids to watch, even though it’s about kids.

Space Jam (1996)

You’ll definitely remember watching Space Jam if you were a 90’s baby.

After Michael Jordan retires from basketball, he’s abducted by the Looney Tunes group to help defeat a group of evil aliens in a game of basketball.

It’s a fun movie to watch even as an adult!

Corporate Animals is so gruesome and ridiculously hilarious, but it’s definitely not for anyone who doesn’t like gore.

It’s more of a horror comedy, so don’t watch if you’re not into horror!

King of Staten Island (2020)

King of Staten Island is loosely based on Pete Davidson’s life growing up in Staten Island, including losing his father during 9/11 and entering the world of stand-up comedy.

It’s not the most wholesome movie, but it’s definitely inspiring.

Bill Murray plays the main character, Phil!

Greed is based on the real life fashion mogul Philip Green.

Drama

Inception (2010)

Inception is one of the most mind-boggling movies out there, and it’s almost 3 hours long.

Dom Cobb enters people’s dreams and steals secrets from their subconscious minds, and he gets the opportunity to have his criminal past wiped in exchange for implanting an idea into someone’s mind.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Elliot Page all star in Inception!

Burden (2018)

Burden is based on a true story about an orphan raised within the Ku Klux Klan, who leaves after being persuaded by his girlfriend.

The Klan seeks vengeance against him, and a kind-hearted reverend takes him, his girlfriend, and her son in.

It’s a powerful film, and I had no idea it was based on a true story until they showed real-life clips at the ending!

Miss Juneteenth (2020)

A former beauty queen and single mom prepares her rebellious teenage daughter for the Miss Juneteenth pageant.

It’s a beautifully written and done film, and it shows how much a mother can love her child and what she’ll do for her child.

Nicole Beharie is an incredible actress, and I could feel every emotion she was portraying on-screen.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)

Never Rarely Sometimes Always is about a teenage girl and her cousin who travel to New York City to get an abortion after an unintended pregnancy.

42 (2013)

42 is based on the true story of Jackie Robinson, one of the most legendary baseball players of all-time.

After Major League executive Branch Rickey drafts Jackie Robinson as a player for the Brooklyn Dodgers, they’re targeted with racism and hostility, but Robinson lets his talents speak for himself.

Fun fact: all MLB players wear the number 42 in April to commemorate Jackie Robinson’s accomplishments, and the number 42 is the only number retired in baseball.

Chadwick Boseman plays Jackie Robinson in the film, and he’s incredible.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021)

Based on real life events of legendary jazz musician Billie Holiday, The United States vs. Billie Holiday is a biopic about how the Federal Bureau of Narcotics tried to silence her.

Andra Day did an incredible job playing Billie Holiday!

The Way Back (2020)

I’m not one for sports, but I do enjoy sports dramas.

The Way Back is about a former basketball superstar who walked away from his dreams and struggles with alcoholism, and finds a second chance coaching his former alma mater team.

Romance

Love & Basketball (2000)

Monica moves in next-door to Quincy at the age of 11, and they grow up together.

While their love blossoms, their dreams to be the best basketball players stand in the way.

Love & Basketball is a super sweet and wholesome love story from the 2000s!

I Still Believe (2020)

Based on Christian singer Jeremy Camp’s real life love story with his late first wife Melissa, I Still Believe is an emotional romance movie.

Although I’m not at all religious, I did enjoy the movie!

KJ Apa from Riverdale (available on Netflix) stars as Jeremy Camp.

All My Life (2020)

All My Life is another emotional romance movie based on the true love story of Jennifer Carter and Solomon Chau.

Definitely have a box of tissues handy ’cause it’s a tearjerker.

The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020)

After Lucy gets broken up with by her boyfriend, she meets a hotelier named Nick, who helps her create a gallery where people can leave memorabilia from their past relationships.

The Broken Hearts Gallery is a cute little rom-com, and Selena Gomez is the executive producer!

It might remind you of The Museum of Broken Relationships in LA, but I believe I saw something about this movie being written before the museum came out.

1 film available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on, watch the trailer

Valley Girl (2020)

If you’re in the mood for more music-themed films, Valley Girl is a musical rom-com.

A valley girl falls in love with a city boy, and both try to make things work despite their friends being against it.

A remake of an 80’s movie of the same with Nicholas Cage, it’s a modern Romeo and Juliet story.

Alicia Silverstone has an uncredited role in the movie too!

Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)

If you’re looking for a fun family movie to watch, Ever After: A Cinderella Story is enjoyable for everyone.

Fantasy

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Pan’s Labyrinth is actually one of my favourite films of all-time, and it’s by Guillermo del Toro.

In 1940s Spain, Ofelia and her pregnant mother move into her stepfather’s house.

On the property, Ofelia meets a faun, who tells her that she’s a reincarnation of an immortal princess, and she has to complete three tasks to return to her kingdom.

I’ve watched Pan’s Labyrinth at least 50 times since I was a kid, and it never gets old.

Crave marks it under their horror category, but to me it’s more of a fantasy or fairy tale movie than horror!

The creatures are actually pretty scary-looking though, so it’s probably not best for young kids to watch.

It’s in Spanish, but it’s absolutely worth sitting through subtitles for.

One of the creepy creatures in Pan’s Labyrinth. This was at a Guillermo del Toro exhibit in Toronto.

The Witches (2020)

Roald Dahl was my favourite author growing up – I read all of his books as a kid!

Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer star in The Witches, a modern retelling of Roald Dahl’s book of the same name.

In the 60’s, a young orphan moves in with his grandma in a rural Alabama town, and they encounter some glamorous yet diabolical witches who hate children.

It’s fun seeing Anne Hathaway playing such different roles nowadays!

Action & Adventure

The Hobbit franchise (2012 & 2013)

If you don’t already know what The Hobbit is, it’s set in the same universe as The Lord of the Rings.

All three movies are a prequel to The Lord of the Rings, and they’re about the adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

Only the first two movies are on Crave – An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug.

2 films available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on

Fast & Furious franchise (2001, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013)

The Fast & Furious franchise is one of my favourite action franchises of all-time.

I’m not really into cars, but it’s a fantastic franchise that’s still very entertaining for people who don’t care that much about cars.

The first 6 movies are available to watch on Crave – all of which are good except for maybe Tokyo Drift, the third movie that doesn’t really fit into anything.

There are actually 3 more Fast & Furious movies that aren’t on Crave if you can find them anywhere else (F9 is in theatres now).

6 films available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on

Bourne franchise (2001, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013)

The Bourne franchise is another great action series, and you can watch the first 4 out of 5 movies on Crave.

Matt Damon stars as Jason Bourne in the first 3 films, a former CIA agent with amnesia, searching for clues of his past.

The 4th movie stars Jeremy Renner as the main character, and Matt Damon returns for the 5th (though it’s not on Crave).

4 films available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on

John Wick franchise (2014 & 2017)

After the dog his recently deceased wife gifted him is killed, retired hitman John Wick seeks vengeance from the mobsters.

I’m not typically into the action genre, but John Wick is a franchise I really like!

You can watch the first two films on Crave Canada, and the third movie on Amazon Prime Video.

2 films available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on, watch the trailers for parts one and two

Batman franchise (1989, 1995, 1997, & 2005)

While I’ve never been into the whole superhero thing, I do like Batman (with Christian Bale) and Spiderman (with Tobey Maguire).

If you’re into Batman, you can watch Batman (1989), Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), and Batman Begins (2005) on Crave.

The funny thing is that different actors play Batman in every single one of these films, and personally I think Christian Bale is my favourite.

You can also watch the animation Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) on Crave.

5 films available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on

Godzilla franchise

If you’re in the mood to watch some old school movies, you can watch some of the OG Godzilla films on Crave, which are all in Japanese.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is in Mandarin, so you’ll have to read subtitles!

The Call of the Wild (2020)

I didn’t think I’d enjoy a movie solely centred around dogs, but it was actually a really great film.

A friendly doggo named Buck gets thrown from his domestic Californian lifestyle to the harsh conditions of the Yukon during the Gold Rush, where he experiences the adventure of a lifetime..

The Call of the Wild is based on a short novel of the same name by Jack London!

Thriller

Parasite (2019)

Parasite is a black comedy and thriller about a wealthy family and a working-class family, and how their lives get intertwined.

It’s a wild and anxiety-filled, and definitely worth sitting through subtitles for.

The film won four Oscars, and it’s currently the highest grossing film in South Korea!

The Little Things (2021)

In the early 90s, a deputy sheriff and sergeant join forces to track down a serial killer terrorizing Los Angeles.

Denzel Washington, Rami Malek (from Mr. Robot on Prime Video), and Jared Leto all star in The Little Things.

Contagion (2011)

The death of an American woman and her son lead to the discovery of a deadly and infectious virus, which leads to a worldwide pandemic.

Contagion came out in 2011, but it sounds like a familiar story, eh?

1 film available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on, watch the trailer

Promising Young Woman (2020)

Barista by day and vigilante by night, 30-year-old med school dropout Cassie gets an unexpected chance to get revenge for the past.

While Promising Young Woman is a thriller/comedy, it’s quite sad, though there’s sort of a happy ending.

A bunch of well-known actors star in this film, including Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox, Adam Brody, and Connie Britton.

1 film available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on, watch the trailer

Girl (2020)

A young woman returns to her small hometown to murder her abusive father, only to find out he’s already been murdered.

Girl definitely would not have been as captivating without Bella Thorne, who I think is an impeccable actress even if she is a controversial figure.

The movie was also filmed locally in Sudbury, Ontario, which is pretty cool!

Horror

There are some pretty good horror flicks that you can watch on Crave.

If you’re looking for an even bigger list, I’ve got a separate blog post all about the best horror movies on Crave!

The Hunt (2020)

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing unaware of how they got there, and it turns out they’re being hunted for sport by a group of elitists.

It’s a super fun, action-packed thriller if that’s what you’re in the mood for!

There’s also quite a bit of gore, so there’s that.

1 film available on Crave with Movies + HBO add-on, watch the trailer

Freaky (2020)

Freaky Friday meets Halloween in this horror-comedy.

When teenager Millie Kessler becomes the target of the Butcher, the town serial killer, they magically switch bodies with the power of a mystical dagger, and she discovers she only has 24 hours to get her identity back.

Freaky is a fun watch, and it’s suitable for even your friends who aren’t crazy about scary movies!

Kathryn Newton (Detective Pikachu and Big Little Lies) and Vince Vaughn star in this one!

Underwater (2020)

Kirsten Stewart does an incredible job in Underwater!

Kate Mandell takes on the job of a nanny for two young orphans, who live in an isolated gothic mansion.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

While it may be impossible to top Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, Mike Flanagan does a pretty great job with the sequel, Doctor Sleep.

Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, it tells the story of Danny Torrance as a grown adult, who still struggles with his trauma from what happened at the Overlook Hotel.

You Should Have Left (2020)

Strange things start to happen when a couple and their daughter rent a secluded vacation home in the countryside.

When I saw the trailer, I thought there’d be a significant meaning behind the age gap relationship with Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried.

I guess it does have a small effect on their relationship, but it definitely could’ve been done with two actors who were closer in age.

Anyway, You Should Have Left is not a bad watch if you’re into supernatural thrillers!

Documentary

Framing Britney Spears (2021)

You might’ve heard the news about Britney Spears’ father’s conservatorship over her life, and Framing Britney Spears goes into a deep dive about it.

I remember a lot of the things mentioned in the doc as a kid, and it’s really eye-opening hearing about them as an adult.

Britney Spears actually spoke out in court recently for the first time and confirmed a lot of things from the documentary to be true.

Fake Famous (2021)

Three different people in Los Angeles with small followings get turned into influencers as a social experiment, which involves buying Instagram followers and taking “fake” photos.

While Fake Famous is a really interesting documentary to watch, it’s clearly very biased and not representative of the actual influencer world lol.

If you enjoy the documentary, you might also enjoy my opinion piece on why everyone wants to be Instagram famous.
