Best ’60s movies on Netflix Canada
The Graduate (1967)
Ever heard of the term “Mrs. Robinson”? It’s actually from The Graduate!
It basically is used as a term to describe an older woman who pursues someone younger than herself, and Simon & Garfunkel even wrote a song about it.
A college graduate gets lured into a seductive affair with the wife of his father’s business partner, while also falling in love with her daughter.
A very young Dustin Hoffman stars in this classic rom-com film, and the soundtrack is pretty great.

The Karate Kid (1984, 1986, 1989, 1994, & 2010)
The Karate Kid is all about Daniel LaRusso, who learns karate from Mr. Miyagi in order to help defend himself and compete in a tournament against his bullies.
The first 3 movies are all about the same guy, the 4th movie stars Hilary Swank, and the latest movie stars Jaden Smith.
There’s also a Netflix Original series based on the franchise called Cobra Kai!

Back to the Future (1985)
After Marty travels back in time and his high school-aged mom starts crushing on him, he tries to make his parents fall in love so that he can exist in the future.
Back to the Future is one of the few movie franchises where every single film is amazing.
Only the first of the movies is available to stream on Netflix, though!

The Breakfast Club (1985)
Five different high school students from different walks of life get stuck together in a room for detention under their power-hungry principal.
As their detention goes on, they start to get to know each other and see each other differently.
The Breakfast Club is such an iconic 80’s teen movie by John Hughes, and it stars Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall.

Top Gun (1986)
Top Gun is an iconic action movie starring a young Tom Cruise, who plays a hot shot fighter pilot.
While fighting to be the top fighter pilot at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, he also tries to win the heart of his flight instructor.
You’ve definitely heard the song “Take My Breath Away”, which was actually made for this classic film.
The movie also inspired the name of a ride at Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan, but it was changed to “Flight Deck” sometime in the last decade.
There’s actually a sequel that just came out in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick, which also stars Tom Cruise!

Dirty Dancing (1987)
Nobody puts baby in a corner.
Dirty Dancing is a classic romance film, and you’ll love it even if you’re not really into dance movies.
While vacationing with her family at a resort, Frances falls in love with a dance instructor, and her father diapproves.
There’s an episode about Dirty Dancing on the Netflix docu-series The Movies That Made Us, and it really makes you appreciate the film so much more.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
A successful banker gets arrested for the murders of his wife and her lover, and is sentenced to life in prison at the Shawshank prison.
The Shawshank Redemption is a classic movie, and it’s actually based on a Stephen King novel!
Morgan Freeman stars in Shawshank.

Casper (1995)
After an afterlife therapist and his daughter move into a crumbling mansion to rid of wicked spirits, they meet a friendly ghost named Casper.
I absolutely adored Casper as a kid, and you can watch this super cute movie starring a very young Christina Ricci on Netflix Canada.

Jumanji (1995 & 2019)
After two kids come across a magical board game called Jumanji, they discover a man who’s trapped in the game and try to rescue him.
It’s a great family movie, and it stars the late Robin Williams.
It’s a fun movie that’s sparked a more modern remake (AKA a video game rather than a board game), and you can watch one of the remake movies on Netflix as well!
2 films available on Netflix
Matilda (1996)
Matilda discovers she has telekinesis powers and starts to use them to fight back against her unappreciative family and her evil principal.
Danny DeVito directs and stars in this Roald Dahl adaptation!

Jurassic Park franchise (1997, 2001, & 2015)
We all know about the iconic Jurassic Park world, where scientists create a park filled with recreations of formerly extinct dinosaurs.
Of course, this doesn’t go very well, and the dinosaurs go off terrorizing people.
You can watch the second, third, and fourth movies of the franchise on Netflix Canada!
3 films available on Netflix
She’s All That (1999)
High school jock Zach gets dared by his friends to take geeky Laney to the prom, and he ends up falling in love with her.
She’s All That is a classic 90’s rom-com, and you can actually also watch the 2021 remake He’s All That on Netflix as well!
It’s definitely not the same as the iconic original movie, but it’s still a fun watch.
1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
The Blair Witch Project is the OG found footage film and one of the best horror movies on Netflix.
Basically, three film students visit a small town to document a legendary local murderer named Blair Witch, and they start to witness strange things.
I’m honestly not crazy about the whole found footage genre, but I can definitely appreciate a good one.
I also really enjoyed the Paranormal Activity series, and you can watch the newest one on Prime Video!

Best early 2000s movies on Netflix Canada
American Psycho (2000)
American Psycho is another psychological horror classic that came out less than a decade after Silence of the Lambs.
Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker with a secret psychopathic side, and his bloodlust gets increasingly violent as he indulges in his dark desires.
It’s a pretty gory one, so shield your eyes from this one if too much blood freaks you out.
Some big names are in this horror classic, including Christian Bale, Reese Witherspoon, and Jared Leto!

13 Going on 30 (2004)
I’ve seen 13 Going on 30 a bajillion times and it never gets old.
On her 13th birthday, Jenna wishes to become thirty, flirty, and thriving, and that’s exactly what she gets.
She wakes up the next day as a successful 30-year-old woman, except she still has her 13-year-old brain.

The Notebook (2004)
Every single day, Duke reads the story of Noah and Allie to Ms. Hamilton, a woman with dementia.
The Notebook is another movie that makes me cry every single time I watch it, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
It’s definitely one of the most beautiful and romantic films of all-time!
1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer
50 First Dates (2004)
After meeting Lucy, who has short-term memory loss, womanizer Henry tries to woo her every single day.
50 First Dates is one of my favourite Adam Sandler movies, and it’s absolutely adorable.
It’s also set in Oahu, so it’s a nice little movie escape if you want to travel while sitting on your couch!
1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
This classic film is based on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel of the same name, and it tells the story of 5 sisters as they deal with issues of marriage, morality, and misconceptions.
It stars both Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike!
