50 Best Movies on Netflix Canada

50 Best Movies on Netflix Canada

Looking for the best movies to binge-watch on Netflix Canada this March 2023?

From rom coms to action flicks, Netflix always have a great selection of films to binge-watch.

Although they do have a lot of bad movies (*ahem* The Princess Switch and Secret Obsession), there are a lot more good ones.

I spend a lot of time watching TV shows and movies, usually in the background of whatever I’m doing – it’s just nice to have background noise, whether I’m cooking or doing work!

Here are the best movies on Netflix Canada to binge-watch by genre, in my personal opinion.

I’ve seen all of these movies multiple times (some maybe dozens), which is why they’re my favourites!

Be sure to also follow me on Instagram and TikTok – I share a lot more content on those platforms that don’t make it to the blog!

Best comedy movies on Netflix Canada

Back to the Future (1985)

After teenage Marty McFly travels back in time and his high school-aged mom starts crushing on him, he tries to make his parents fall in love so that he can exist in the future.

Back to the Future is one of the few movie franchises where every single film is amazing.

Only the first of the movies is available to stream on Netflix, but you can stream all 3 on Prime Video!

She’s the Man (2006)

When Viola’s football team is dissolved, she disguises herself as her twin brother to play on the boys’ team instead.

She’s the Man is a super cute movie, and it also never gets old.

Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum star in this iconic movie!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

King of Staten Island (2020)

King of Staten Island is loosely based on Pete Davidson’s life growing up in Staten Island, including losing his father during 9/11 and entering the world of stand-up comedy.

It’s not the most wholesome movie, but it’s definitely inspiring.

If you like King of Staten Island, you might also like Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, a show based on comedian Awkwafina’s beginnings, which you can stream on Crave.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Hustlers (2019)

Destiny works as a stripper to make ends meet, taking care of her daughter and grandmother.

She meets Ramona, a veteran exotic dancer, who shows her how to swindle money from rich clients.

Hustlers is based on a true story that’s actually very fascinating!

Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, and Cardi B are all part of the cast.

Best romance movies on Netflix Canada

The Notebook (2004)

Every single day, Duke reads the story of Noah and Allie to Ms. Hamilton, a woman with dementia.

The Notebook is another movie that makes me cry every single time I watch it, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

It’s a really beautiful movie, and definitely a classic!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Based on Jane Austen’s famous novel of the same name, the story follows Elizabeth Bennet and her 4 sisters as they deal with issues of marriage, morality, and misconceptions.

Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike both star in Pride & Prejudice!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

50 First Dates (2004)

After meeting Lucy, who has short-term memory loss, womanizer Henry tries to woo her every single day.

50 First Dates is one of my favourite Adam Sandler movies, and it’s absolutely adorable.

It’s also set in Oahu, so it’s a nice little movie escape if you want to travel while sitting on your couch!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Friends with Benefits (2011)

Jamie, a headhunter, recruits Dylan to work as an art director at GQ in New York City.

Fed up with relationships, they decide to become friends with benefits, and things get complicated.

Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake star in this one, and they’re a great duo!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Toronto skyline view from Casa Loma
The real couple behind All My Life got married at Casa Loma in Toronto.

All My Life (2020)

All My Life is another emotional romance movie based on the true love story of Jennifer Carter and Solomon Chau.

They were actually a couple from Toronto, and they got married at Casa Loma!

Definitely have a box of tissues handy ’cause it’s a tearjerker.

1 film available on Crave, watch the trailer

Dirty Dancing (1987)

Nobody puts baby in a corner.

Dirty Dancing is a classic romance film, and you’ll love it even if you’re not really into dance movies.

While vacationing with her family at a resort, Frances falls in love with a dance instructor, and her father diapproves.

There’s an episode about Dirty Dancing on the Netflix docu-series The Movies That Made Us, and it really makes you appreciate the film so much more.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Burlesque (2010)

Ali leaves her job as a waitress to pursue a career on stage, and she ends up becoming a lead dancer and singer in a club.

Cher and Christina Aguilera are amazing in Burlesque – it’s one of my family’s favourite movies!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Someone Great (2019)

Although Someone Great is a rom-com, I’d say it’s more about love in friendships than romantic love.

After Jenny and her long-term boyfriend break up, she and her two best friends go on one last adventure around New York City together before she leaves for her dream job in San Francisco.

The soundtrack is great, the cast is great, the storyline is great – everything about this movie is great.

It’s now one of my favourite rom coms of all-time – I think I watched it 3 times in the same week the first time I saw it!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

He’s Just Not That into You (2009)

He’s Just Not That into You is a cute rom-com that follows several different people and their love (or heartbreak) stories, and they all connect together somehow.

It’s a star-studded cast with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, and so many other awesome actors and actresses.

New Year’s Eve is another similar movie where it follows a bunch of different people who are connected!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The High Note (2020)

Maggie works as a personal assistant to superstar Grace Davis, and she dreams of becoming a music producer.

The High Note is a super cute movie, especially if you’re a big music lover!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Kissing Booth (2018, 2020, & 2021)

Elle has never been kissed before, and she decides to run a kissing booth for a school fundraiser.

She ends up locking lips with her long-time crush, who also happens to be her best friend’s brother.

The Kissing Booth may be cliché, but it’s still a cute story that’s enjoyable to watch, even though it really didn’t need 3 separate movies.

Joey King is incredible as an actress, and she’s really amazing to watch on screen!

She and Jacob Elordi actually dated in real life, though they’re not together anymore.

Best drama movies on Netflix Canada

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

A successful banker gets arrested for the murders of his wife and her lover, and is sentenced to life in prison at the Shawshank prison.

The Shawshank Redemption is a classic movie, and it’s actually based on a Stephen King novel!

Morgan Freeman stars in Shawshank.

Molly’s Game (2017)

Molly’s Game is another biographical drama, and it’s based on Molly Bloom’s memoir of the same name.

In her twenties, Molly Bloom ran the most exclusive underground poker game in the world for celebrities and the mafia, and she eventually gets caught by the FBI.

It’s so incredible watching how smart this woman is, especially seeing as she was on her way to becoming an Olympic skier (until an injury forced her to quit) before all this went down.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Blind Side (2009)

The Blind Side is based on the true and heartwarming story of Michael Oher and his adoptive family, the Tuohy family.

He ends up being drafted into the NHL!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Room (2015)

Held captive for years in an enclosed space, a young woman and her son, who was born in captivity, finally gain their freedom.

Room is a heartbreaking story based on a novel inspired by the horrible Fritzl case.

Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay both star in the film, and they’re both incredible actors.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Impossible (2012)

While enjoying their winter vacation in Thailand, a family of 5 are separated when a horrifying tsunami strikes.

The Impossible is actually based on a true story of a real family, which is so crazy.

Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Holland all star in the movie!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Les Misérables (2012)

A prisoner named Jean Valjean breaks parole and starts a new life.

He becomes the caretaker of a young girl, but his past comes back to catch up with him.

Les Misérables is an incredible film, and the songs in it are iconic – “Do You Hear the People Sing?” lives rent-free in my head lol.

There are tons of big names in here, including Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Amanda Seyfried!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021)

Based on real life events of legendary jazz musician Billie Holiday, The United States vs. Billie Holiday is a biopic about how the Federal Bureau of Narcotics tried to silence her.

Andra Day does an incredible job playing Billie Holiday!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Pieces of a Woman - Netflix movie

Pieces of a Woman (2020)

Pieces of a Woman is a heartbreaking drama about a young couple who go through a traumatic home birth.

Both Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf give incredible performances – the film is incredibly heartbreaking.

Balram Halwai becomes a driver for a prestigious Indian family and uses his wit to escape from poverty.

Priyanka Chopra stars in The White Tiger, and it’s based on a novel of the same name!

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is an alternate history film featuring some real life characters.

Formerly a 1950s western star, Rick tries to make it again in Hollywood in the year 1969.

He spends most of his time alongside his friend and stunt double, Cliff.

Meanwhile, living next door to Rick are Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski.

If you like this film, you’ll also like the Netflix series Hollywood, which also shows an alternate history with real life characters like Rock Hudson and Anna May Wong!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Farewell (2019)

You might’ve heard of the Oscar-nominated film The Farewell, which features comedian Awkwafina, who won an Oscar for best actress.

Billi’s family returns to China to say goodbye to her grandmother, the only person who doesn’t know she only has a few weeks to live.

Both English and Mandarin are spoken in the film.

If you love Awkwafina, you’ll enjoy her show Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, a show on Crave based on her life!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)

Never Rarely Sometimes Always is about a teenage girl and her cousin who travel to New York City to get an abortion after an unintended pregnancy.

The film is Sidney Flanigan’s debut as an actress, which is hard to believe because she’s incredible in it!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Best biographical dramas on Netflix Canada

First They Killed My Father (2017)

First They Killed My Father is based on the memoir of Loung Ung’s life.

It shows Loung Ung’s memories of when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia in 1975 during the Vietnam War, and how she and her family had to survive.

This really hits close to home because both sides of my family escaped Vietnam during the war, and it’s a heartbreaking film to watch.

You will be crying a lot while watching this.

The film was directed by Angelina Jolie and written by both her and Ung (who now lives in the U.S.)

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Guilty (2021)

A demoted police detective works as a 911 operator, and he scrambles to save a distressed caller.

Jake Gyllenhaal is incredible in the movie, and Ethan Hawke voices the sergeant, though I don’t think you see him at all in the movie.

The Guilty is based on a Danish movie, which was actually based on a true story!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Best action & adventure movies on Netflix Canada

John Wick franchise (2014 & 2017)

After the dog his recently deceased wife gifted him is killed, retired hitman John Wick seeks vengeance from the mobsters.

I’m not typically into the action genre, but John Wick is a franchise I really like!

You can watch the first two movies on Netflix Canada, and the third movie on Crave.

2 films available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Jurassic Park franchise (1997, 2001, & 2015)

We all know about the iconic Jurassic Park world, where scientists create a park filled with recreations of formerly extinct dinosaurs.

Of course, this doesn’t go very well, and the dinosaurs go off terrorizing people.

You can watch the second, third, and fourth movies of the franchise on Netflix Canada!

There’s also a Netflix animated series for kids, called Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous.

3 films available on Netflix

Jumanji franchise (1995 & 2019)

After two kids come across a magical board game called Jumanji, they discover a man who’s trapped in the game and try to rescue him.

It’s a fun movie that’s sparked a more modern remake, and you can also watch the second movie in the remake on Netflix!

In Jumanji: The Next Level, four students get trapped in a magical video game during detention, and they get thrown into the world.

While the concept is the same as the 1995 film, the fact that it’s based in a video game makes it a lot different.

Both the 1995 and 2010s versions are great in their own ways!

2 films available on Netflix, watch the trailers for the 1995 and 2019 films

Godzilla franchise (1998 & 2021)

Godzilla is a prehistoric sea monster who destroys cities, and you can watch the 1998 and 2021 movies on Netflix.

Alexander Skarsgård and Millie Bobby Brown both star in the new 2021 movie!

There are also a few Godzilla animated series and movies on Netflix.

2 films available on Netflix

The Hunger Games franchise (2012-2015)

If you don’t already know of The Hunger Games, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers compete in the televised Hunger Games.

After her little sister gets randomly drawn to participate, Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her place, and that’s where the adventure begins.

The franchise is based off of the trilogy novel series, and the third book is split into two movies, so there are 4 movies you can watch on Netflix.

4 films available on Netflix

Escape from Pretoria (2020)

Two white South Africans are imprisoned for working on behalf of the African National Congress, and they plot their escape from the notorious Pretoria Prison.

You would totally think Escape from Pretoria is unrealistic, but the crazy thing is that it’s based on a true story.

Daniel Radcliffe does an incredible job playing the main character!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Top Gun (1986)

Top Gun is an iconic classic movie starring a young Tom Cruise, who plays a hot shot fighter pilot.

While fighting to be the top fighter pilot at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, he also tries to win the heart of his flight instructor.

You’ve definitely heard the song “Take My Breath Away”, which was actually made for this classic film.

The movie also inspired the name of a ride at Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan, but it was changed to “Flight Deck” sometime in the last decade.

There’s actually a sequel that just came out in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick, which also stars Tom Cruise!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Bourne franchise (2002-2016)

A former CIA agent named Jason Bourne suffers from amnesia, and he tries to discover his identity in the midst of a clandestine conspiracy within the CIA.

The Bourne franchise is a really great action series, and you can watch all the movies in the franchise on Netflix.

Matt Damon stars as Jason Bourne in the first 3 and the 5th film, while Jeremy Renner stars in the 4th film.

5 films available on Netflix

The Gray Man - Netflix movie

The Gray Man (2022)

When a CIA agent uncovers agency secrets, he triggers a global hunt by international assassins.

Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans both star in the film, and it’s super interesting to see Chris Evans play the role of the bad guy.

My dad and I both really enjoyed The Gray Man – it’s so action-packed!

Because it was so popular and well-received, Netflix is actually working on a sequel and spin-off!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Pompeii (2014)

Milo is a slave turned gladiator, and he falls in love with Cassia, the daughter of a wealthy merchant.

When she becomes betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator, Milo rushes against time to save her.

Pompeii is based on what actually happened in Pompeii, but the story itself is fiction.

If you don’t know what happened in Pompeii, it was an ancient city that was covered in ash after a volcano erupted.

I remember watching Pompeii in theatres, and it would be amazing to see the site in person someday!

I also totally never realized Kit Harington (AKA Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, which you can watch on Crave) was the main character!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Best sci-fi movies on Netflix Canada

The Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Soldier Bill Cage is sent on a suicide mission when invincible aliens attack earth, and he finds himself thrown into a time loop, reliving the same fight over and over again.

If you’re into time loop movies, you’ll definitely enjoy this movie!

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt also both star in The Edge of Tomorrow.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Venom (2018)

I’m not big on the whole superhero movie franchise thing, but Adam and I both really enjoyed Venom.

Eddie Brock is an investigative journalist trying to take down the evil CEO behind Life Foundation.

After breaking into the Life Foundation’s research facility, his body gets merged with Venom, an alien who gives Eddie superhuman abilities.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Tau (2018)

A woman gets kidnapped and trapped inside a house, and tries to hack the AI computer system to save herself.

Tau is an interesting sci-fi movie to watch on Netflix if you’re into the whole artificial intelligence shebang!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Best thriller movies on Netflix Canada

Parasite (2019)

Parasite is a black comedy and thriller about a wealthy family and a working-class family, and how their lives get intertwined.

It’s wild and anxiety-filled, and definitely worth sitting through subtitles for.

The film won four Oscars, and it’s currently the highest grossing film in South Korea!

South Korea produces tons of incredible films and TV shows, and Netflix has released a lot of Netflix Original Korean dramas over the years!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Purge (2013)

Once a year for 12 hours, all crime is legal in America, including murder.

Some people choose to purge their dark desires, and some people are forced to survive.

You can watch the first movie in the franchise on Netflix, which stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey.

You can also watch the latest movie, The Forever Purge, on Crave.

There’s an Amazon Original series of the same name that’s also worth watching, but it’s definitely not as good as the movies.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Hotel Mumbai (2018)

In the midst of a terror attack in the heart of Mumbai, a brave chef and kitchen worker decide to risk their lives to try and protect the frightened guests of the hotel they work at.

Hotel Mumbai is actually based on a true story that happened at the Taj Hotel, which is wild and heartbreaking!

Dev Patel stars in Hotel Mumbai, and he’s amazing!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

A Simple Favor (2017)

Stephanie, a widowed, single mother, meets Emily, a seemingly glamorous career woman with the perfect family and life.

When Emily mysteriously disappears, Stephanie launches her own investigation and finds more secrets than she bargained for.

Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, and Henry Golding star in A Simple Favor!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Lost Girls & Love Hotels (2020)

Haunted by her dark past, a young English teacher spends her nights drinking and meeting with strangers at love hotels.

She gets involved in a dangerous love affair with a charming Yakuza gangster in Tokyo.

Alexandra Daddadrio kills it in this role, and so does her co-star Takehiro Hira.

Lost Girls & Love Hotels is based on a novel by Catherine Hanrahan, which is actually inspired by her own experiences in Japan!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Best horror movies on Netflix Canada

The Conjuring franchise (2013 & 2021)

The Conjuring is one of the creepiest horror franchises out there, probably because each movie is based on a real case solved by Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were paranormal investigators.

In the first movie, the Warrens come to the assistance of a troubled family, who experience increasingly disturbing events in their newly-occupied farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971.

The Devil Made Me Do It is the third instalment of The Conjuring series, where Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate a young man accused of murder, who claims he’s been possessed.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star in all three movies, and they’re fantastic together.

Only the first and third movies are available to stream on Netflix, and they’re terrifying!

There are also spinoff movies all in the same universe, including the creepy Annabelle.

2 films available on Netflix, watch the trailers for the first and second movies

Get Out (2017)

Chris’ girlfriend invites him to a weekend getaway to meet her parents, and he starts to discover some disturbing things.

Get Out was absolutely mind-blowing when it first came out, and it’s definitely one of the best psychological thrillers out there.

It was written and directed by the genius Jordan Peele, who also came out with Us and Nope!

It’s crazy that Get Out was also his debut into horror – he started out as a comedian on Mad TV!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

A Quiet Place (2018 & 2021)

A Quiet Place is a fantastic thriller that was so innovative and unique when it first came out, and it’s about a young family who lives in silence to avoid mysterious alien creatures that hunt by sound.

If you’ve seen Bird Box or The Silence (also on Netflix), it’s quite similar, but way better in my opinion!

A Quiet Place Part II is pretty much a direct continuation from the first movie, and it’s super action-packed.

Super cute thing: John Krasinksi (director and the dad in the movie) and Emily Blunt (the mom in the movie) are married in real life!

2 films available on Netflix, watch the trailers for the first and second movies
