50 Best Movies on Netflix Canada

Looking for the best movies to binge-watch on Netflix Canada this August 2021?

From rom coms to action flicks, Netflix always have a great selection of films to binge-watch.

Although they do have a lot of bad movies (*ahem* The Princess Switch and Secret Obsession), there are a lot more good ones.

I spend a lot of time watching TV shows and movies, usually in the background of whatever I’m doing – it’s just nice to have background noise, whether I’m cooking or doing work!

Here are the best movies on Netflix Canada to binge-watch by genre, in my personal opinion.

I’ve seen all of these movies multiple times (some maybe dozens), which is why they’re my favourites!

Be sure to also follow me on Instagram – I share a lot more content on there that doesn’t make it to the blog!

Comedy movies on Netflix Canada

Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls is iconic to our generation, and it will never not be funny.

After moving from Africa to an American suburb, Cady transitions into becoming a regular high school girl.

Alongside two friends she meets, they try to take down the Plastics, a trio of popular girls who rule the school.

The movie was also filmed in Toronto, which is pretty cool!

It’s one of the best and most iconic comedy movies to watch on Netflix Canada.

Easy A (2010)

Easy A is one of those classic teen comedies you never get over, and it’s one of the best comedy movies on Netflix Canada.

After lying about losing her virginity, the entire school ends up finding out, but Olive uses this to her advantage.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched this movie, but it will forever remain one of my favourite teen comedies.

She’s the Man (2006)

When Viola’s football team is dissolved, she disguises herself as her twin brother to play on the boys’ team instead.

She’s the Man is a super cute movie, and it also never gets old.

Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum star in this iconic movie!

Pitch Perfect franchise (2012 & 2015)

College student Beca joins an all-girl acapella group filled with all kinds of different personalities.

She helps break them out of their traditional ideals as they work together to compete in college music competitions against other top acapella groups at college competitions.

There are tons of popular names in here, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow!

The original Pitch Perfect is probably my favourite of all the movies, and you can watch both parts one and two on Netflix Canada.

It’s an awesome musical comedy that’s perfect for any music lovers!

17 Again (2009)

Mike O’Donnell gave up his dream of becoming a basketball star to marry his high school sweetheart and raise their child, but he regrets his life choices as a middle-aged man.

We’re the Millers (2013)

David, a drug dealer, is forced by his boss to smuggle drugs from Mexico.

He ends up hiring a stripper, petty thief, and teenage neighbour to play his fake family and help him smuggle the drugs.

I remember watching We’re the Millers in theatres when it came out and thought it was absolutely hilarious.

Plus, it has Jennifer Aniston in it!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Horrible Bosses (2011)

Nick, Dale, and Kurt all hate their horrible bosses, and after a drunken night out, decide to hire an assassin to murder them.

Of course, things don’t go as planned – quite horribly actually.

This movie is hilarious, and there’s actually a part two, but it’s not on Netflix!

Jennifer Aniston is in this one too – can you tell how much I love her? 😛

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Wrong Missy (2020)

I wasn’t expecting much when I added The Wrong Missy to my watchlist, but it’s absolutely hilarious.

Tim invites the woman of his dreams to come on a work retreat to Hawaii, and accidentally texts a woman he went on a bad date with.

It’s very cliché, but still an enjoyable movie worth watching if you’re in the mood for something light-hearted and fun.

David Spade and Lauren Lapkus are great together in the film!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Think Like a Man (2012 & 2014)

I also watched Think Like a Man when it came out in theatres back then and loved it.

It’s a romantic comedy based on Steve Harvey’s book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.

The movie follows four couples, with each of the women reading Steve Harvey’s book.

As the women start applying Harvey’s teachings into their own relationships, the men try to turn the tables using the same teachings.

There’s also a sequel on Netflix, Think Like a Man Too!

2 films available on Netflix

I Feel Pretty (2018)

I Feel Pretty is an adorable comedy film that shows that it’s truly what’s on the inside that makes you beautiful.

After wishing at a fountain and knocking her head at Soulcycle, Renee suddenly sees herself as what she thinks is the most beautiful woman in the world.

In reality, her appearance hasn’t changed, and her fearless attitude and confidence is what makes her excel.

Amy Schumer does an amazing job in the movie!

Romance movies on Netflix Canada

The Notebook (2004)

Every single day, Duke reads the story of Noah and Allie to Ms. Hamilton, a woman with dementia.

The Notebook is another movie that makes me cry every single time I watch it, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

50 First Dates (2004)

After meeting Lucy, who has short-term memory loss, womanizer Henry tries to woo her every single day.

50 First Dates is one of my favourite Adam Sandler movies, and it’s absolutely adorable.

It’s also set in Oahu, so it’s a nice little movie escape if you want to travel while sitting on your couch!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)

A womanizer named Connor tries to brainwash his younger brother into not getting married, and he ends up getting haunted by the ghosts of his ex-girlfriends.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a super cute rom-com, and it stars Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner!

Friends with Benefits (2011)

Jamie, a headhunter, recruits Dylan to work as an art director at GQ in New York City.

Fed up with relationships, they decide to become friends with benefits, and things get complicated.

Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake star in this one, and they’re great together!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Just Go With It (2011)

A plastic surgeon invites his assistant and her children to join him and his young girlfriend on a trip to Hawaii, and things get complicated.

Sophie is an aspiring writer who travels to Italy with her fiancé, and discovers a wall of heartbroken letters dedicated to Shakespeare’s tragic heroine, Juliet Capulet.

She writes back to one of the letters from 1957 and ends up meeting Claire, who sets out to find her long-lost lover along with her disapproving grandson.

Letters to Juliet is a super cute movie, especially if you’re big on travel.

Amanda Seyfried also plays the main character!

Dirty Dancing (1987)

Nobody puts baby in a corner.

Dirty Dancing is a classic romance film, and you’ll love it even if you’re not really into dance movies.

While vacationing with her family at a resort, Frances falls in love with a dance instructor, and her father diapproves.

There’s an episode about Dirty Dancing on the Netflix docu-series The Movies That Made Us, and it really makes you appreciate the film so much more.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Honey (2003, 2011, & 2018)

My family and I absolutely loved watching Honey when I was a kid.

Jessica Alba stars as Honey Daniels, an aspiring hip-hop choreographer who teaches kids dance at a local youth centre to keep them off the streets.

She thinks she’s hit the jackpot when she gets scouted by a music director, who turns out to be a creep.

The second and fourth sequels are also on Netflix, but the casts are completely different.

3 films available on Netflix

Burlesque (2010)

Ali leaves her job as a waitress to pursue a career on stage, and she ends up becoming a lead dancer and singer in a club.

Cher and Christina Aguilera are amazing in Burlesque – it’s one of my family’s favourite movies!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Someone Great (2019)

Although Someone Great is a rom com, I’d say it’s more about love in friendships than romantic love.

After Jenny and her long-term boyfriend break up, she and her two best friends go on one last adventure around New York City together before she leaves for her dream job in San Francisco.

The soundtrack is great, the cast is great, the storyline is great – everything about this movie is great.

It’s now one of my favourite rom coms of all-time – I think I watched it 3 times in the same week the first time I saw it!

Definitely one of the best Netflix Original movies available on Netflix Canada.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Nappily Ever After (2018)

Violet lives a seemingly perfect life, with a great job, great boyfriend, and great hair.

After an incident at the hair salon, she realizes her life wasn’t so perfect after all, and she embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

Nappily Ever After is a happy, feel-good rom com that’s more about self-love than romantic love.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

He’s Just Not That into You (2009)

He’s Just Not That into You is one of those movies you watch at least once a year.

Or maybe it’s just a movie I watch at least once a year.

Anyway, it’s a cute rom com that follows several different people and their love (or heartbreak) stories, and they all connect together somehow.

It’s a star-studded cast with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, and so many other awesome actors and actresses.

New Year’s Eve is another similar movie on Netflix, but I only watch that one around New Year’s Eve.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Holiday (2006)

The Holiday is one of those movies you just have to watch every holiday season.

Two women from different countries swap homes for the holidays, and they fall in love with local men at their destinations.

Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black all star in this holiday classic!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Midnight Sun (2018)

Teenager Katie Price has a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight, and she ventures out at night to play her guitar at the train station.

One night she encounters her crush while performing, and she tries to keep her condition a secret as they start a romance.

Midnight Sun is a tearjerker, and I was very impressed by Bella Thorne’s performance.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Kissing Booth (2018 & 2020)

Elle has never been kissed before, and she decides to run a kissing booth for a school fundraiser.

She ends up locking lips with her long-time crush, who also happens to be her best friend’s brother.

The Kissing Booth may be cliché, but it’s still a cute story that’s enjoyable to watch.

Joey King is incredible as an actress, and she’s really amazing to watch on screen!

Part 3 will be coming out on August 11th.

First They Killed My Father (2017)

It shows Loung Ung’s memories of when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia in 1975 during the Vietnam War, and how she and her family had to survive.

This really hits close to home because both sides of my family escaped Vietnam during the war, and it’s a heartbreaking film to watch.

The Blind Side (2009)

The Blind Side is based on the true and heartwarming story of Michael Oher and his adoptive family, the Tuohy family.

Michael comes from an impoverished upbringing, and his life turns around for the better when he gets adopted by the Tuohys.

He ends up being drafted into the NHL!

I’ve also seen this movie dozens of times with my family, and it’s one of the best movies on Netflix Canada.

Based on the true story of pianist Dr. Don Shirley, Green Book explores racism and segregation in the 1960s.

The movie is titled after The Negro Motorist Green Book, which was a real life guidebook that mentioned hotels, services, and places that were friendly to African-American travellers.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Pieces of a Woman (2020)

The White Tiger (2021)

Balram Halwai becomes a driver for a prestigious Indian family and uses his wit to escape from poverty.

Priyanka Chopra stars in The White Tiger, and it’s based on a novel of the same name!

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Miss Virginia (2019)

Miss Virginia is based on the true story of Virginia Ford, an incredible woman who fought for federally funded scholarships for underprivileged students in Washington, D.C.

A struggling single mom who refuses to see her teenage son drop out of school and deal drugs, she fights to make a difference for families like her own.

Uzo Aduba from Orange is the New Black plays Ford, and she’s absolutely amazing.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Molly’s Game (2017)

Molly’s Game is another biographical drama, and it’s based on Molly Bloom’s memoir of the same name.

In her twenties, Molly Bloom ran the most exclusive underground poker game in the world for celebrities and the mafia, and she eventually gets caught by the FBI.

It’s so incredible watching how smart this woman is, especially seeing as she was on her way to becoming an Olympic skier (until an injury forced her to quit) before all this went down.

The Founder (2016)

A salesman named Ray comes across a burger joint called McDonald’s while driving through Southern California, and realizes how much potential it has to become something bigger.

The New Romantic (2018)

After a journalism student’s column about her love life in the school newspaper gets cancelled, she becomes a sugar baby and starts writing about her experience.

Action & adventure movies on Netflix Canada

John Wick franchise (2014, 2017, & 2019)

After the dog his recently deceased wife gifted him is killed, retired hitman John Wick seeks vengeance from the mobsters.

I’m not typically into the action genre, but John Wick is a franchise I really like!

You can watch the first three movies on Netflix Canada.

3 films available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Jumanji (1995 & 2017)

After two kids come across a magical board game called Jumanji, they discover a man who’s trapped in the game and try to rescue him.

It’s a fun movie that’s sparked a more modern remake, which is also on Netflix!

In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, four students get trapped in a magical video game during detention, and they get thrown into the world of.

It’s hilarious, and the cast is awesome.

While the concept is the same as the 1995 film, the fact that it’s based in a video game makes it a lot different.

Both movies are great in their own ways!

Part two of the Jumanji remake is also available to stream on Prime Video.

2 films available on Netflix, watch the trailers for the 1995 and 2017 films

The Hunger Games franchise (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)

If you don’t already know of The Hunger Games, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers compete in the televised Hunger Games.

After her little sister gets randomly drawn to participate, Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her place, and that’s where the adventure begins.

The franchise is based off of the trilogy novel series, and the third book is split into two movies, so there are 4 movies you can watch on Netflix.

4 films available on Netflix

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

In 19th century China, warrior Master Li embarks on a quest to find his sword when it’s stolen.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is in Mandarin, so you’ll have to read subtitles!

Detective Pikachu (2019)

Adam and I watched Detective Pikachu in theatres, and we enjoyed it so much we wanted so badly to watch it again in theatres.

After Tim’s detective father mysteriously goes missing, he travels to Ryme city to search for answers.

He runs into his father’s former Pokémon partner, Pikachu, and it turns out Tim is the only person who can understand and talk to him.

It doesn’t have anything to do with the Pokémon story we know and love, but it’s very nostalgic and still very cute.

There are also plenty of animated Pokémon episodes and movies available to stream on Netflix Canada!

Sci-Fi

Venom (2018)

I’m not big on the whole superhero movie franchise thing, but Adam and I both really enjoyed Venom.

Eddie Brock is an investigative journalist trying to take down the evil CEO behind Life Foundation.

After breaking into the Life Foundation’s research facility, his body gets merged with Venom, an alien who gives Eddie superhuman abilities.

Tau (2018)

Tau is an interesting sci-fi movie to watch on Netflix if you’re into the whole artificial intelligence shebang!

Thriller movies on Netflix Canada

Disturbia (2007)

A high school student is placed under house arrest, and starts spying on his neighbours out of boredom.

He starts to believe one of his neighbours is a serial killer, and investigates with the help of his friends.

Fun fact: this was actually Shia LaBeouf’s breakout role after Even Stevens (remember watching it on the Family Channel?)

The Roommate (2011)

A college student named Sara becomes roommates with Rebecca and they become friends.

Of course, things take a turn for the worst as Rebecca becomes obsessed with Sara and starts to target people in her life.

Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, Cam Gigandet, and Aly Michalka all star in The Roommate!

Tbh Leighton Meester truly makes the movie.

The psychological thriller is pretty much a remake of the 90’s movie Single White Female.

Horror movies on Netflix Canada

Insidious franchise (2010, 2013, 2015, 2018)

The Insidious series is my favourite horror movie franchise of all-time, and you can watch the entire thing on Netflix Canada.

I love Chapters 1 and 2 because they’re so well thought-out, and everything makes so much sense in Chapter 2!

The gist of the first two movies is that a family gets haunted by malevolent entities because of a special skill they have.

The other movies aren’t as great, but they’re still worth watching if you’re the type of person who likes to watch all the movies in the same universe.

4 films available on Netflix, watch the trailers for chapters onetwothree, and four

Hereditary

Ari Aster is the mastermind behind Hereditary, one of the most uncomfortable and eerie horror films you will ever watch.

After a matriarch passes away, her daughter and grandchildren start to see strange things and learn dark secrets behind their ancestry.

It’s definitely not a light-hearted family drama.

It: Chapter Two (2019)

While I did like the first It movie more than Chapter Two, it was still nice to close off the story.

27 years after being defeated by the Losers’ Club, Pennywise comes back to terrorize the town of Derry.

All the members of the Losers’ Club are now grown adults with their own lives, and they reunite to get rid of Pennywise once and for all.

This is not a movie to watch if you don’t like seeing kids being killed (or eaten alive) – the first movie gave me nightmares for months because of that.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

Port Hope, Ontario
We visited Port Hope in Ontario while they were filming It: Chapter Two. They had American flags up all over! We also tried to take photos of the theme park set, but we got kicked out.

Gerald’s Game (2017)

Gerald’s Game is one of the best film adaptations of a Stephen King novel out there.

Jessie and Gerald head to their isolated cabin to rekindle their marriage, and during a kinky game, Gerald dies from a heart attack.

Handcuffed to the bed with no way to escape, Jessie starts to hallucinate.

It’s a very eerie story, and the film is very well-done – one of the best horror movies on Netflix Canada.

1 film available on Netflix, watch the trailer

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Silence of the Lambs is one of the classic psychological horror films, and it’s a good one.

A young FBI cadet is forced to confide in an incarcerated psychopath in order to catch another serial killer who skins his victims.

Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, the FBI cadet, and Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal Lecter.

Hannibal Lecter is one scary dude, and I wouldn’t recommend this one if you’re more into thrillers than actual horror.

Red Dragon is also on Netflix, and it’s the prequel to Silence of the Lambs.

2 films available on Netflix, watch the trailers for parts one and two

American Psycho (2000)

American Psycho is another psychological horror classic that came out less than a decade after Silence of the Lambs.

Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker with a secret psychopathic side, and his bloodlust gets increasingly violent as he indulges in his dark desires.

It’s a pretty gory one, so shield your eyes from this one if too much blood freaks you out.

Some big names are in this horror classic, including Christian Bale, Reese Witherspoon, and Jared Leto!
