Midsommar (2019)
If cults freak you out (but also intrigue you at the same time), Midsommar is a horror film you’ll absolutely want to watch.
A group of friends travel to a small community in Sweden for the annual midsummer festival, which is also the hometown of one of the friends.
They quickly realize there’s more to this friendly group of people than meets the eye.
Ari Aster is one of my favourite horror directors, and Midsommar is my favourite film of his!
He says Midsommar is more like a fairy tale than a horror film, but you can be the judge of that.
It’s very gory, so you might want to shield your eyes at some points if you can’t handle that.
Aster’s other horror film, Hereditary, is also amazing, and quite possibly one of the best horror movies of all-time.
You can watch Hereditary over on Netflix!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Frozen (2010)
This is definitely not the Frozen you’re thinking about.
Three friends get stranded on a ski lift as the ski resort closes for the end of the weekend.
With nothing but the clothes on their back, they have to figure out how to survive.
This movie will make you terrified of going skiing or snowboarding, and I kept thinking about it while skiing in Whistler lol.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
A Perfect Getaway (2009)
Newlyweds Cliff and Cydney travel to Hawaii for their honeymoon, and things take a turn for the worse when they find out tourists are being murdered on the island.
A Perfect Getaway has an incredible ending if you’re a fan of good twists.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Don’t Hang Up (2016)
Two pranksters have the tables turned on them when a stranger’s prank call turns into a deadly game.
Don’t Hang Up is an interesting concept, and it’s definitely a creepy watch.
If you like the Scream franchise, you’ll definitely enjoy it!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
It Follows (2014)
After Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend for the first time, she finds out she’s contracted a fatal curse that gets passed from victim to victim via sex.
I watched this as a teenager almost a decade ago and it was pretty creepy back then!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Madres (2021)
A pregnant Mexican-American couple move to a migrant farming community in 1970s California, where the wife starts to experience strange symptoms and terrifying visions.
I honestly thought parts of Madres were pretty ridiculous (why is she chopping veggies without looking?! Why isn’t she waddling as a pregnant lady?!)
BUT, after watching until the end and seeing that it’s actually based on true events, I thought it was an important watch.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Evil Eye (2020)
A superstitious mother believes her daughter’s new boyfriend is a ghost of her own past.
Majority of the cast is South Asian, which is awesome to see in a Hollywood movie!
Evil Eye is more of a thriller than a horror, so even the most scaredy-cat friends of yours will be able to handle this one.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Animales Humanos (2020)
After a couple’s young daughter gets bitten by their neighbour’s dog, they find themselves living in terror.
Animales Humanos is in Spanish, so you’ll have to read subtitles.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Estranged (2015)
January returns home after an accident that leads to memory loss and puts her in a wheelchair.
As she starts to recover, she slowly begins to remember why she left.
Estranged is both disturbing and sad, but it’s definitely worth a watch.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Static (2012)
While a young novelist and his wife are coping with the loss of their child, a panicked girl shows up at their door claiming she’s being stalked by masked strangers.
The twist in Static is pretty good, and Milo Ventimiglia (from This Is Us on Netflix) stars in it!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Rental (2020)
Two couples rent an oceanside getaway home for a weekend, and start to suspect that their host might be spying on them.
You might not want to stay at Airbnbs after watching The Rental, but it’s still worth a watch.
Dave Franco also directed and produced the movie!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Final Wish (2018)
After his father’s death, a man returns home to help his grief-stricken mother.
While going through his dad’s belongings, he comes across a mysterious item that is much more than it seems.
Michael Welch (Eric from Twilight) and Lin Shaye (Elise from Insidious) star in The Final Wish.
I really enjoyed this horror movie, and it reminded me a lot of Wish Upon with Joey King, which is also on Prime Video!

Best supernatural horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Insidious franchise (2011-2015)
The Insidious series is actually my favourite horror movie franchise of all-time.
Chapters 1 are 2 are so well thought-out, and everything makes so much sense in Chapter 2!
The gist of the first two movies is that a family gets haunted by malevolent entities because of a special skill they have.
The rest of the movies in the franchise aren’t as great, but they’re still worth watching if you’re the type of person who likes to watch all the movies in the same universe.
You can watch the first 3 movies on Prime Video, the 4th movie on Netflix, and the newest movie on Crave!
3 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Amityville Horror (2005)
A young family moves into a beautiful new home in a small town, and soon discover why the house had such an affordable price tag: the former tenant murdered his family after supposedly being possessed by the devil.
Ryan Reynolds and Chloë Grace Moretz star in this supernatural horror, which was actually inspired by a book that was based on a real-life mass murder.
If you’ve seen The Conjuring movies, you might find it interesting that the late paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren were actually amongst the first to investigate the famous Amityville haunting.
You can watch the original 1979 movie on Prime Video as well!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Dream House (2011)
A successful New York publisher leaves his lucrative job to spend more time with his wife and two daughters, and they move to their dream home in a small town.
As they settle in, they discover murders happened in the home, and they try to figure out the mystery of what happened.
Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts all star in Dream House, and the twist is pretty good!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Babadook (2014)
A single mother is plagued by the violent death of her husband, while also battling her young son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house.
She soon discovers there is a sinister presence all around her.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Woman in Black franchise (2012 & 2015)
The Woman in Black was one of the first movies I saw with Daniel Radcliffe after Harry Potter, and it was honestly hard for me to see him as anything other than HP back then.
Rewatching it, I actually really enjoyed the movie!
The Woman in Black follows a lawyer who travels to a house of a recently deceased woman, and after discovering her spirit is still in the house, he learns she’s killing the village children.
There’s also a second movie set thirty years after the events of the first film, which you can also watch on Prime Video.
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Mirrors (2008)
An ex-cop takes a job as a security guard at the damaged ruins of a department store, and uncovers a supernatural force using mirrors to try to gain entrance into this world.
I watched this movie as a teen and it literally scarred me forever.
There’s a particular scene in the first movie that I’ll never forget, and you’ll know it when you see it.
Kiefer Sutherland and Amy Smart star in the first film, which you can watch on Prime Video!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Carrie (1976 & 2013)
Carrie is a shy and awkward teen who gets bullied at school, while also dealing with her religious mother.
After a cruel prank on prom night, she uses her secret telekinetic powers to get revenge against her classmates.
You can watch the original 1976 movie alongside the 2013 remake, which are both based on a Stephen King novel.
John Travolta stars in the original movie, and Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, and Judy Greer all star in the remake!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Grudge (2004)
You’ve definitely heard of The Grudge horror franchise, and it’s an American remake of the iconic Japanese horror movie.
The Grudge curse starts when someone dies in extreme rage or sorrow, and it gets passed on when someone encounters the entity, which then passes onto that person, and continues repeatedly.
You can also watch the 2020 movie on Netflix, which is in the same universe as the 2004 movie!
1 film available on Prime Video
The Manor (2021)
After suffering a stroke, Judith decides to move into a nursing home, where she suspects something supernatural is preying on the residents.
I love how original The Manor is, and the ending was actually surprising!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Polaroid (2019)
High school loner Bird finds a vintage Polaroid camera, and discovers that anyone who gets their photo taken dies a mysterious death.
It’s sort of like Final Destination if you’re into that.
Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl from Riverdale on Netflix) stars in Polaroid!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Nocturne (2020)
Timid Juliet stumbles across a mysterious notebook from her recently deceased classmate, and things in her life seemingly begin to turn in her favour.
Once overshadowed by her accomplished twin sister, she begins to outshine her in every way she dreamed of.
Sydney Sweeney and Julie Benz both star in Nocturne!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Silent Hill franchise (2006 & 2012)
Silent Hill is a strange town and demonic alternate dimension filled with creepy monsters.
The movies are actually based on a video game of the same name, which is based on a real town (with fictional monsters, of course).
They also filmed both movies in Canada, which is kinda cool!
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer for the first and second movies
Friend Request (2016)
Laura, a popular college student, decides to accept an online friend request from Marina, a social outcast.
When Laura decides to unfriend her, Marina takes her own life, and things start to take a dark turn.
Alycia Debnam-Carey from Fear the Walking Dead (also on Prime Video) stars as the main character!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best sci-fi horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Dark Skies (2013)
A couple and their two sons live a peaceful life in the suburbs until strange things start to happen in their home.
I’m not crazy about extraterrestrial movies, but Dark Skies is great – especially because it’s more of a horror film!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Black Box (2020)
After waking up from a coma with memory loss, a single father undergoes an experimental treatment to try to remember his past.
If you’re into Black Mirror, you’ll definitely like Black Box.
Solos and Soulmate are both great sci-fi TV shows on Prime that you’ll also enjoy if you like this sort of stuff – neither are horror, though!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best psychological horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
American Psycho (2000)
Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker with a secret psychopathic side, and his bloodlust gets increasingly violent as he indulges in his dark desires.
American Psycho is a pretty gory horror film, so shield your eyes from this one if too much blood freaks you out.
It was good the first time watching it, but I think I liked it even better the second time around.
Some big names are in this horror classic, including Christian Bale, Reese Witherspoon, and Jared Leto!
There’s actually a sequel with Mila Kunis available on Prime Video as well, but it’s more of a comedy horror and isn’t as good.
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Get Out (2017)
Chris’ girlfriend invites him to a weekend getaway to meet her parents, and he starts to discover some disturbing things.
Get Out was absolutely mind-blowing when it first came out, and it’s definitely one of the best psychological thrillers out there.
It was written and directed by the genius Jordan Peele, who also came out with Us and Nope!
It’s crazy that Get Out was also his debut into horror – he started out as a comedian on Mad TV!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Split (2016)
Kevin has revealed 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, but there’s still one that remains submerged.
He kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls in an isolated underground facility, and is thrust into a war for survival within himself.
This M. Night Shyamalan movie stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Bruce Willis.
Split is the second movie in the Unbreakable trilogy, with Unbreakable and Glass (also on Prime Video) also being in the same universe.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Wish Upon (2017)
Clare receives a mysterious old box from her father for her 17th birthday, and she discovers it has the ability to grant her wishes.
Things start to take a dark turn when she realizes the people around her die in gruesome ways whenever she makes a wish.
I honestly wasn’t expecting much from Wish Upon when I decided to watch it, but it was surprisingly really good.
Plus, Joey King is just an incredible actress to see on-screen.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
While vacationing at a remote cabin in the woods, a young family are taken hostage by four armed strangers.
The strangers demand they make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse and save the world, and the family must decide what they believe before all is lost.
Dave Bautista and Rupert Grint both star in Knock at the Cabin, and of course, M. Night Shyamalan also does a cameo in the film!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Lie (2018)
A father and daughter spot the girl’s best friend on the side of the road while on their way to dance camp, and their good intentions soon result in terrible consequences.
While it’s not an amazing horror movie, it’s a decent watch, especially because I love Joey King as an actress.
The twist is pretty wild too!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best creature & monster horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
A little girl stays with her father and his girlfriend at a mansion they’re restoring, and unknowingly releases evil creatures from the basement.
I’ve seen this movie so many times because it’s really good, and I really wish they’d made a part two!
I recently started watching the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin spinoff on Crave, and totally didn’t realize Bailee Madison was the little girl in Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark!
Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes also both star in the movie.
Guillermo del Toro is one of the producers, and even cameos as one of the creatures!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Descent 2 (2009)
Flesh-eating creatures prey on people who dare to wander into their caves.
Let’s just say that you won’t want to venture into any caves after watching The Descent. *shudders*
And maybe don’t watch the Descent films if you’re claustrophobic.
There are two movies in the franchise, but only the second movie is available to stream on Prime Video!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Daybreakers (2009)
A plague leads to most of the human population becoming vampires, and a researcher partners with two surviving humans to perfect a cure.
Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe both star in Daybreakers!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best horror comedy movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
A group of friends visit a remote cabin for a little getaway, and weird things start to happen.
I loved this movie so much when I first watched it, and it’s definitely one of my all-time favourite horror movies.
Just when you think things are over, they’re not, and the twist is just too good.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Blood Fest (2018)
Horror fans flock to Blood Fest, a celebration of iconic horror movies, and attendees start dying.
It’s up to three teens and their knowledge of horror movie clichés to stop the bad guys and survive.
If you’re into horror comedies and gore, you’ll definitely be into Blood Fest.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Totally Killer (2023)
35 years after the murders of three teens, a masked serial killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim.
When teenage Jamie comes face-to-face with the masked killer, she accidentally time travels back in 1987, where she teams up with her teenage mother to take down the killer once and for all.
I was expecting this movie to be pretty corny, but I actually enjoyed it and laughed out loud quite a bit.
Kiernan Shipka stars as Jamie in Totally Killer, as well as Lochlyn Munro, who plays Betty’s dad in Riverdale on Netflix!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best slasher & gory movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Scream franchise (1996-2011)
Can you call yourself a horror fan without having seen Scream?
The Scream franchise revolves around Sidney Prescott, who constantly gets chased by psychopaths in ghostface masks.
It’s definitely one of my favourite horror franchises of all-time, and you can stream the first four movies on Prime Video.
You can also watch the fifth and sixth movies over on Crave!
It’s the ultimate slasher franchise that never gets old or boring, and I never get tired of re-watching it.
While Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger may be the OG slasher villains, I find myself laughing too much since both franchises started in the 70s and 80s and the special effects and costumes are kinda corny.
4 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Saw franchise (2004-2009)
You’ve probably heard of the Saw franchise, and it’s definitely not something for everyone.
A masked man named Jigsaw tortures people in the worst ways possible, and all of the movies are pretty gory and horrifying.
They actually filmed the latest movie, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, here in Toronto!
You can watch 6 of the 10 movies in the franchise on Prime Video.
6 films available on Prime Video
Halloween franchise (1995-2009)
We all know the iconic Halloween slasher franchise for its infamous Michael Myers masks.
Michael Myers goes around killing on Halloween, and his favourite victim to chase around is Laurie Strode, played by OG scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis.
She was in the original movie back in 1978, and she reprises her role in the newer movies as well!
There are 13 total movies in this iconic horror franchise, and you can watch 4 of the movies on Prime Video.
4 films available on Amazon Prime Video
Jeepers Creepers franchise (2001-2022)
This cult horror franchise is all about the Creeper, who goes around killing and eating people.
In the first movie, two college students and siblings rush home while being chased by a man-eating monster called the Creeper.
The movies are quite terrifying and gruesome (especially the first), so ya might not want to watch this one if you’re not a fan of man-eating monsters.
A young Justin Long stars in this cult horror franchise, and you can watch 3 of the movies on Prime Video.
3 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Texas Chainsaw franchise (2013 & 2017)
In Texas Chainsaw, two siblings set out to their family’s old farmhouse with their friends, where they discover a group of crazed, murderous outcasts living next-door.
Alexandra Daddario stars in the seventh instalment of this iconic and gory franchise.
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer for the 7th and 8th films
Pearl (2022)
Pearl dreams of a glamorous life like in the movies, but she lives on a rural farm with her ailing father and shrewd mother.
Mia Goth stars as Pearl, and this second film is actually what really made me love her as an actress.
You can also watch the first movie, X, on Netflix, which is actually the sequel!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Hostel franchise (2005 & 2007)
Travellers get abducted and tortured in the most brutal ways.
This series haunted me for weeks and is the reason why I will only stay in hotels and Airbnbs and not hostels.
If you’re into Hostel, you might also like 13 Cameras and 14 Cameras, which are about a creepy landlord who spies on his tenants.
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Green Inferno (2013)
After a group of college activists get caught in a plane crash in the Amazon, they find themselves in an even stickier situation when they get abducted by a tribe of cannibals.
The Green Inferno is hella disturbing and extremely gory, and tbh it literally made me sick to my stomach.
Apparently it’s inspired by a movie called Cannibal Holocaust from the 80s, and I don’t think I could watch it lol.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Open 24 Hours (2020)
After setting her boyfriend on fire, a woman gets a job as a late-night attendant at a gas station.
I randomly stumbled across Open 24 Hours while browsing Prime Video, and was surprisingly impressed by how good it was.
It’s a modern slasher horror with a good amount of gore, and it’s pretty terrifying!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Pet (2016)
A lonely man kidnaps a beautiful woman and traps her in a cage beneath the animal shelter he works at.
If you’re into movie twists, you’ll definitely enjoy watching Pet.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
V/H/S franchise (2013 & 2014)
The V/H/S series is a group of anthology films featuring found-footage shorts.
The whole found-footage thing might be overdone, but V/H/S does a good job of keeping it scary.
V/H/S/2 is probably the creepiest out of all of them, and you can watch both the second and third movies on Prime Video!
There are a total of 6 movies in the franchise, with a new movie coming out in 2024, and there are also two spinoff movies.
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailers for the second and third movies
Black Christmas (2006)
A group of sorority sisters get stranded in their campus house during a snowstorm, all while a vicious killer is on the loose.
Lacey Chabert (Gretchen from Mean Girls) and Michelle Trachtenberg (from Ice Princess on Disney+) both star in Black Christmas, which is actually a loose remake of the 1974 film of the same name!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
