Best thriller movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Triangle (2009)
After a storm ensues, a group of friends aboard a yacht jump onto a mysterious ship for safety.
I watched this movie without knowing anything about it beforehand, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!
It’s a really fascinating film that’ll leave you wondering what the heck really happened.
It’s definitely an underrated horror movie on Prime Video if you’re looking for hidden gems to watch.

Don’t Breathe (2016 & 2021)
A trio of thieves break into a blind veteran’s apartment in search of a major cash settlement he received after the death of his child.
They get more than they bargained for, and it turns into a desperation for survival.
I thought Don’t Breathe was going to be terrible before I saw it, but it’s actually a really good thriller.
The sequel, Don’t Breathe 2, follows the veteran and his young daughter, who live together in an isolated cabin.
When his daughter is kidnapped, he’s forced to tap into his darker instincts.
While Don’t Breathe 2 isn’t as ~realistic~ as the first movie, it’s still very enjoyable to watch!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailers for the first and second movies
Backcountry (2014)
Backcountry is loosely based on a true story of a real Ontario couple that got chased by a man-eating black bear in backcountry.
It’s actually very terrifying, and it’s made me scared of doing any “real” hiking in Canada lol.
It’s terrible to say that I haven’t seen many great Canadian horror movies, but that’s the honest truth.
Backcountry is definitely one of the good Canadian horror movies though!

It Follows (2014)
After Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend for the first time, she finds out she’s contracted a fatal curse that gets passed from victim to victim via sex.
I watched this as a teenager almost a decade ago and it was pretty creepy back then!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Till Death (2021)
Stuck in a stale and unhappy marriage, Emma and her controlling husband spend a romantic anniversary evening at their secluded lakehouse in the winter.
Emma wakes up to a surprise the next morning when she’s handcuffed to her dead husband, who she discovers turned it all into his own twisted game.
Megan Fox stars in Till Death, and she’s actually pretty good in it!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Madres (2021)
A pregnant Mexican-American couple move to a migrant farming community in 1970s California, where the wife starts to experience strange symptoms and terrifying visions.
I honestly thought parts of Madres were pretty ridiculous (why is she chopping veggies without looking?! Why isn’t she waddling as a pregnant lady?!)
BUT, after watching until the end and seeing that it’s actually based on true events, I thought it was an important watch.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Evil Eye (2020)
A superstitious mother believes her daughter’s new boyfriend is a ghost of her own past.
Majority of the cast is South Asian, which is awesome to see in a Hollywood movie!
Evil Eye is more of a thriller than a horror, so even the most scaredy-cat friends of yours will be able to handle this one.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Animales Humanos (2020)
After a couple’s young daughter gets bitten by their neighbour’s dog, they find themselves living in terror.
Animales Humanos is in Spanish, so you’ll have to read subtitles.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Estranged (2015)
January returns home after an accident that leads to memory loss and puts her in a wheelchair.
As she starts to recover, she slowly begins to remember why she left.
Estranged is both disturbing and sad, but it’s definitely worth a watch.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Static (2012)
While a young novelist and his wife are coping with the loss of their child, a panicked girl shows up at their door claiming she’s being stalked by masked strangers.
The twist in Static is pretty good, and Milo Ventimiglia (from This Is Us on Netflix) stars in it!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Don’t Hang Up (2016)
Two pranksters have the tables turned on them when a stranger’s prank call turns into a deadly game.
Don’t Hang Up is an interesting concept, and it’s definitely a creepy watch.
If you like the Scream franchise (the first 3 movies are on Crave), you’ll definitely enjoy it!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Rental (2020)
Two couples rent an oceanside getaway home for a weekend, and start to suspect that their host might be spying on them.
You might not want to stay at Airbnbs after watching The Rental, but it’s still worth a watch.
Dave Franco also directed and produced the movie!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Final Wish (2018)
After his father’s death, a man returns home to help his grief-stricken mother.
While going through his dad’s belongings, he comes across a mysterious item that is much more than it seems.
Michael Welch (Eric from Twilight) and Lin Shaye (Elise from Insidious) star in The Final Wish.
I really enjoyed this horror movie, and it reminded me a lot of Wish Upon with Joey King, which is also on Prime Video!

Best supernatural horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
The Woman in Black (2012)
A lawyer travels to a house of a recently deceased woman, and after discovering her spirit is still in the house, he learns she’s killing the village children.
The Woman in Black was one of the first movies I saw with Daniel Radcliffe after Harry Potter, and I didn’t love it the first time I saw it.
Was it my bias of him playing a role other than Harry Potter? Maybe.
Anyway, I liked it a lot more the next time I rewatched it!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Grudge (2004)
You’ve definitely heard of The Grudge horror franchise, and it’s an American remake of the iconic Japanese horror movie.
The Grudge curse starts when someone dies in extreme rage or sorrow, and it gets passed on when someone encounters the entity, which then passes onto that person, and continues repeatedly.
1 film available on Prime Video
The Manor (2021)
After suffering a stroke, Judith decides to move into a nursing home, where she suspects something supernatural is preying on the residents.
I love how original The Manor is, and the ending was actually surprising!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Nocturne (2020)
Timid Juliet stumbles across a mysterious notebook from her recently deceased classmate, and things in her life seemingly begin to turn in her favour.
Once overshadowed by her accomplished twin sister, she begins to outshine her in every way she dreamed of.
Sydney Sweeney and Julie Benz star in Nocturne!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Silent Hill franchise (2006 & 2012)
Silent Hill is a strange town and demonic alternate dimension filled with creepy monsters.
The movies are actually based on a video game of the same name, which is based on a real town (with fictional monsters, of course).
They also filmed both movies in Canada, which is kinda cool!
2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailer for the first and second movies
Umma (2022)
A single mother lives a quiet life on an isolated American farm with her teenage daughter, and things take a terrifying turn when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea.
Umma is pretty predictable, but I do love Sandra Oh.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Friend Request (2016)
Laura, a popular college student, decides to accept an online friend request from Marina, a social outcast.
When Laura decides to unfriend her, Marina takes her own life, and things start to take a dark turn.
Alycia Debnam-Carey from Fear the Walking Dead (also on Prime Video) stars as the main character!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best sci-fi horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Dark Skies (2013)
A couple and their two sons live a peaceful life in the suburbs until strange things start to happen in their home.
I’m not crazy about extraterrestrial movies, but Dark Skies is great – especially because it’s more of a horror film!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
After waking up from an accident, Michelle finds herself trapped in an underground bunker with a stranger named Howard, who tells her the world outside is uninhabitable.
10 Cloverfield Lane is one of the three movies in the Cloverfield anthology franchise, each being very different.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Black Box (2020)
After waking up from a coma with memory loss, a single father undergoes an experimental treatment to try to remember his past.
If you’re into Black Mirror, you’ll definitely like Black Box.
Solos and Soulmate are both great sci-fi TV shows on Prime that you’ll also enjoy if you like this sort of stuff – neither are horror, though!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best psychological horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Get Out (2017)
Chris’ girlfriend invites him to a weekend getaway to meet her parents, and he starts to discover some disturbing things.
Get Out was absolutely mind-blowing when it first came out, and it’s definitely one of the best psychological thrillers out there.
It was written and directed by the genius Jordan Peele, who also came out with Us and Nope!
It’s crazy that Get Out was also his debut into horror – he started out as a comedian on Mad TV!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Split (2016)
Kevin has revealed 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, but there’s still one that remains submerged.
He kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls in an isolated underground facility, and is thrust into a war for survival within himself.
This M. Night Shyamalan movie stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Bruce Willis.
Split is the second movie in the Unbreakable trilogy, with Unbreakable (on Disney+) and Glass also being in the same universe.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Wish Upon (2017)
Clare receives a mysterious old box from her father for her 17th birthday, and she discovers it has the ability to grant her wishes.
Things start to take a dark turn when she realizes the people around her die in gruesome ways whenever she makes a wish.
I honestly wasn’t expecting much from Wish Upon when I decided to watch it, but it was surprisingly really good.
Plus, Joey King is just an incredible actress to see on-screen.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021)
A sequel to Escape Room (which you can watch on Netflix), Escape Room: Tournament of Champions is a direct continuation of the story.
Six former winners find themselves locked in another series of deadly escape rooms, in a sick “tournament of champions”.
I honestly enjoyed the first movie a lot more, but it’s still fun seeing all the different escape rooms and how they try to get out of them.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Lie (2018)
A father and daughter spot the girl’s best friend on the side of the road while on their way to dance camp, and their good intentions soon result in terrible consequences.
While it’s not an amazing horror movie, it’s a decent watch, especially because I love Joey King as an actress.
The twist is pretty wild too!

Best creature & monster horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Train to Busan (2016)
Train to Busan is without a doubt the best zombie horror film I have ever seen.
While Seok-woo and his daughter are aboard a train to the city of Busan, they get trapped in the middle of a zombie outbreak.
It’s absolutely terrifying, especially since the zombies actually run fast.
The film is in Korean, so you’ll have to read subtitles, but it’s absolutely worth it.
There’s also a sequel called Peninsula, but it’s a completely different story and I didn’t love it as much as the first movie.
If you like Train to Busan, you should also watch Kingdom, a Netflix series about zombies invading ancient Korea (who also run fast), and #Alive, another South Korean Netflix movie about zombies!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
A Quiet Place (2018)
A Quiet Place is a fantastic thriller that was so innovative and unique when it first came out, and it’s about a young family who lives in silence to avoid mysterious alien creatures that hunt by sound.
If you’ve seen Bird Box or The Silence on Netflix, it’s quite similar, but way better in my opinion!
A Quiet Place Part II is pretty much a direct continuation from the first movie, and you can watch it on Netflix.
Super cute thing: John Krasinksi (director and the dad in the movie) and Emily Blunt (the mom in the movie) are married in real life!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Invitation (2022)
After the death of her mother, Evie takes a DNA test and discovers a long-lost cousin she never knew she had.
He invites her to a lavish wedding in the English countryside, where she meets a handsome aristocratic host.
She soon realizes something more sinister is going on, and she’s thrust into a nightmare of survival.
The Invitation starts out really promising, but it sort of falls off near the ending.
Nevertheless, it’s still an overall decent watch, and Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei in Game of Thrones on Crave) even stars as the lead!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
This reboot of the Resident Evil franchise is all about a group of survivors trying to survive a zombie outbreak in their hometown of Raccoon City, once home to the pharmaceutical giant Umbrella.
Kaya Scodelario (Effy from Skins), Robbie Arnell (Nathan from Upload), and Tom Hopper (Luther from Umbrella Academy) all star in this reboot.
It definitely doesn’t compare to the OG Resident Evil, but it’s still entertaining, and the zombies look scary.
If you’re interested in the original movies, you can watch the 5th and 6th Resident Evil movies on Netflix!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best horror comedy movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Blood Fest (2018)
Horror fans flock to Blood Fest, a celebration of iconic horror movies, and attendees start dying.
It’s up to three teens and their knowledge of horror movie clichés to stop the bad guys and survive.
If you’re into horror comedies and gore, you’ll definitely be into Blood Fest.

Best slasher movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada

Scream (1996, 1997, & 2000)
Can you call yourself a horror fan without having seen Scream?
The Scream franchise revolves around Sidney Prescott, who constantly gets chased by psychopaths in ghostface masks.
It’s definitely one of my favourite horror franchises of all-time, and you can stream the first 4 movies on Prime Video.
Scream 5 is available to stream on Netflix, and Scream 6 is out in theatres now!
It’s the ultimate slasher franchise that never gets old or boring, and I never get tired of re-watching it.
While Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger may be the OG slasher villains, I find myself laughing too much since both franchises started in the 70s and 80s and the special effects and costumes are kinda corny.
4 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailers
Open 24 Hours (2020)
After setting her boyfriend on fire, a woman gets a job as a late-night attendant at a gas station.
I randomly stumbled across Open 24 Hours while browsing Prime Video, and was surprisingly impressed by how good it was.
It’s a modern slasher horror with a good amount of gore, and it’s pretty terrifying!
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Best gory & disturbing movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Saw (2004)
You’ve probably heard of the Saw franchise, and it’s definitely not for everyone.
A masked man named Jigsaw tortures people in the worst ways possible, and all of the movies are pretty gory and horrifying.
The first movie is available to stream on Prime Video, and you can watch all 9 movies in the franchise on Crave!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
Wrong Turn (2003)
If you’re terrified of cannibalism, maybe don’t watch this one.
However, if you love your gory and disturbing horror movies, then Wrong Turn is perfect for ya.
There are 7 movies in the Wrong Turn franchise, but only the first film is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
Desmond Harrington (AKA Detective Joey Quinn in Dexter, available on Crave) stars in it!
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
The Green Inferno (2013)
After a group of college activists get caught in a plane crash in the Amazon, they find themselves in an even stickier situation when they get abducted by a tribe of cannibals.
The Green Inferno is hella disturbing and extremely gory, and tbh it literally made me sick to my stomach.
Apparently it’s inspired by a movie called Cannibal Holocaust from the 80s, and I don’t think I could watch it lol.
1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer
Pet (2016)
A lonely man kidnaps a beautiful woman and traps her in a cage beneath the animal shelter he works at.
If you’re into movie twists, you’ll definitely enjoy watching Pet.
1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer
V/H/S franchise (2013 & 2014)
The V/H/S series is a group of anthology films featuring found-footage shorts.
The whole found-footage thing might be overdone, but V/H/S does a good job of keeping it scary.
V/H/S/2 is definitely creepier than the first one, and V/H/S Viral really isn’t all that scary.
Only the second and third movies are available to stream on Prime Video!
2 films available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailers for parts two and three
