How does Amazon Prime Video work in Canada?

In order to access Prime Video, you have to have an Amazon Prime membership.

The highlight of having a Prime membership is obviously the free and quick shipping, and all the other benefits are just perks of having the membership.

At $9.99 a month or $99 annually, it’s definitely worth investing in a Prime membership if you do plan on using at least one or two of the benefits!

Benefits of Amazon Prime in Canada:

  • Free 2-day shipping on millions of items
  • Free same-day and 1-day delivery on eligible items in some Canadian cities
  • Access to Prime Video, Amazon Music, Prime Reading, and Twitch Prime
  • Unlimited photo storage on Amazon Photos

You can also subscribe to various channels under Prime Video, including:

  • Shudder (horror)
  • hayu (reality TV)
  • STACKTV (Global, Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada, W Network, History, Adult Swim, Slice, Showcase, National Geographic, Teletoon, Treehouse, YTV)

Here’s a look at the Canadian pricing for different Prime Video channels:

Helter Skelter documentary series on Hollywood Suite
Hollywood Suite is an add-on channel available on Prime Video, and Helter Skelter: An American Myth is a fantastic documentary series about the Manson family.

Prices for Amazon Prime channels:

Amazon vs. Netflix vs. Crave

Prime Video, Netflix, and Crave are all great for their own reasons.

I personally find that Amazon has a lot more older movies, which I really enjoy.

The Amazon Original series seem to be geared towards an older crowd, and maybe even an American audience, but some of them are good.

Netflix definitely has the best original series and more options, while Crave offers HBO, Showtime, and Hollywood blockbusters.

I’m subscribed to all three streaming services, but it all depends on your personal preference!

Liam Neeson stars as Oskar Schindler, and I honestly never knew he did any popular films before Taken!

Hotel Rwanda (2004)

Hotel Rwanda is an incredible drama based on the real life story of how hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina saved hundreds of people during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Paul is a Hutu man living a nice life with his Tutsi wife and young kids in Rwanda.

When Hutu military forces start murdering Tutsi ethnic minorities on the streets and in their homes, he does everything he can to help refugees take shelter in his hotel.

In the real life Rwandan genocide, an estimated number of over 1 million people died, and an estimated half that number of women experienced sexual violence.

I Care a Lot (2021)

A con artist works as a legal guardian and unknowingly bilks an elderly woman with ties to the Russian mafia.

Rosamund Pike is just as unlikeable in I Care a Lot as she is in Gone Girl, but I guess that makes her a really good actress.

Peter Dinklage is also in this film!

1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer

Spencer (2021)

Spencer is a fictional take on the real story of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ strained marriage.

I really loved the cinematography in the film, and Kirsten Stewart was incredible as Princess Diana!

Twilight franchise (2008-2012)

High school student Bella Swan reluctantly moves in with her estranged father in a small Pacific Northwest town.

There, she meets the handsome and mysterious Edward Cullen, who turns out to be a vampire who doesn’t drink blood.

The original Twilight movie is pretty bad, but I really enjoyed the rest of the movies in the franchise!

It stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as the leads, and you can watch all of the movies on Prime Video.

4 films available on Prime Video

Jungle (2017)

Jungle is based on the true story of Yossi Ghinsberg, and it tells his story of survival after he and his friends follow a strange guide into the Amazon rainforest.

It’s actually very terrifying, but it’s a miracle Ghinsberg made it out alive.

Danielle Radcliffe does an incredible job of playing the lead actor!

5 films available on Prime Video

John Wick franchise (2014 & 2017)

After the dog his recently deceased wife gifted him is killed, retired hitman John Wick seeks vengeance from the mobsters.

In the second movie, he’s forced to put his desire of a quiet civilian life on hold when a mafia lord shows up on his doorstep.

I’m not typically into the action genre, but John Wick is a franchise I really like!

You can watch the first two movies on Prime Video, and all of the movies on Crave.

2 films available on Prime Video, watch the trailers for the first and second movies

The Hunger Games franchise (2012-2015)

If you don’t already know of The Hunger Games, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers compete in the televised Hunger Games.

The franchise is based off of the trilogy novel series, and the third book is split into two movies, so there are 4 movies you can watch on Prime Video.

4 films available on Prime Video

Spider-Man franchise (2012-2017)

If you haven’t seen any of the Spider-Man movies before, it’s basically about a guy who gets bitten by a spider and uses his spidey senses and powers to defeat bad guys.

Superheroes aren’t really my thing, but the original Spider-Man series starring Tobey Maguire was amazing.

If you’re in the mood for more classic crime dramas, you’ll definitely enjoy Scarface.

Saltburn (2023)

A rich Oxford University student is distraught by his classmate’s unfortunate living situation, and he decides to invite him over to his family’s estate for the summer.

He soon comes to regret this decision when a series of horrifying events begin to happen to his family.

Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, and Carey Mulligan all star in this black comedy thriller, which actually received a few Golden Globe nominations!

It’s got some pretty graphic scenes, so ya might not want to watch this one with your parents.

Split (2016)

Kevin has revealed 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, but there’s still one that remains submerged.

He kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls in an isolated underground facility, and is thrust into a war for survival within himself.

This M. Night Shyamalan movie stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Bruce Willis.

Split is the second movie in the Unbreakable trilogy, with Unbreakable (on Disney+) and Glass also being in the same universe.

1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer

Triangle (2009)

After a storm ensues, a group of friends aboard a yacht jump onto a mysterious ship for safety.

I watched this movie without knowing anything about it beforehand, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!

It’s a really fascinating film that’ll leave you wondering what the heck really happened.

1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer

The Voyeurs (2021)

The Voyeurs is a super intense thriller about a young couple who starts spying on their neighbours across the street to the point where they become obsessed.

Sydney Sweeney and Justice Smith were both awesome and had fantastic chemistry.

I also thought it was really cool that the movie was based on Montreal!

It’s not family-friendly at all by the way, so maybe don’t watch this with your parents or your kids.

1 film available on Prime Video, watch the trailer

My Son (2021)

A divorced couple’s young son goes missing from camp, and it turns out he’s been kidnapped.

James McAvoy (young Professor X from X-Men) stars in My Son, and he’s awesome in it.

Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park, British Columbia
We hiked this trail in Banff, unknowingly with a bear not far from us. *shudders*

Backcountry (2014)

Backcountry is loosely based on a true story of a real Ontario couple that got chased by a man-eating black bear in backcountry.

It’s actually very terrifying, and it’s made me scared of doing any “real” hiking in Canada lol.

It’s terrible to say that I haven’t seen many great Canadian horror movies, but that’s the honest truth.

Backcountry is definitely one of the good Canadian horror movies though!

Best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada

I’m a big horror fan, and I’ve watched tons of horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada (the good, the bad, and the ugly).

I’ve included some of the best ones here, but I’ve also got a separate blog post all about the best horror movies on Prime Video, with even more great films for my fellow horror fans.

Train to Busan (2016)

Train to Busan is without a doubt the best zombie horror film I have ever seen.

While Seok-woo and his daughter are aboard a train to the city of Busan, they get trapped in the middle of a zombie outbreak.

It’s absolutely terrifying, especially since the zombies actually run fast.

The film is in Korean, so you’ll have to read subtitles, but it’s absolutely worth it.

There’s also a sequel called Peninsula, but it’s a completely different story and I didn’t love it as much as the first movie.

If you like Train to Busan, you should also watch Kingdom, a Netflix series about zombies invading ancient Korea (who also run fast), and #Alive, another South Korean Netflix movie about zombies!

1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer

Get Out (2017)

Chris’ girlfriend invites him to a weekend getaway to meet her parents, and he starts to discover some disturbing things.

Get Out was absolutely mind-blowing when it first came out, and it’s definitely one of the best psychological thrillers out there.

It was written and directed by the genius Jordan Peele, who also came out with Us and Nope!

It’s crazy that Get Out was also his debut into horror – he started out as a comedian on Mad TV!

1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer

Don’t Hang Up (2016)

Two pranksters have the tables turned on them when a stranger’s prank call turns into a deadly game.

Don’t Hang Up is an interesting concept, and it’s definitely a creepy watch.

If you like the Scream franchise (the first 3 movies are on Crave), you’ll definitely enjoy it!
