Amazon vs. Netflix vs. Crave

Prime Video, Netflix, and Crave are all great for their own reasons.

I personally find that Amazon has a lot more older movies, which I really enjoy.

The Amazon Original series seem to be geared towards an older crowd, and maybe even an American audience, but some of them are good.

Netflix definitely has the best original series and more options, while Crave offers HBO, Showtime, and Hollywood blockbusters.

I’m subscribed to all three streaming services, but it all depends on your personal preference!

Best comedy movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada

Legally Blonde (2001, 2003, & 2009)

If you’re in need of some career inspiration, Legally Blonde is the movie to watch.

After Elle’s boyfriend breaks up with her to start a new life with a new girl and as a Harvard law student, Elle enrols into the same school and shows him who’s boss.

What, like it’s hard?

Even though I’ve watched Legally Blonde a gazillion times, I had no idea it was actually based on a true story.

It’s based on novelist Amanda Brown’s experiences at Stanford Law School!

There’s also a second movie, and a third movie about Elle’s cousins, though I haven’t seen the third one.

Hotel Rwanda (2004)

Hotel Rwanda is an incredible drama based on the real life story of how hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina saved hundreds of people during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Paul is a Hutu man living a nice life with his Tutsi wife and young kids in Rwanda.

When Hutu military forces start murdering Tutsi ethnic minorities on the streets and in their homes, he does everything he can to help refugees take shelter in his hotel.

In the real life Rwandan genocide, an estimated number of over 1 million people died, and an estimated half that number of women experienced sexual violence.

It’s truly a heartbreaking story, and I encourage you to read up on the actual events after watching the movie.

Rosamund Pike is just as unlikeable in I Care a Lot as she is in Gone Girl, but I guess that makes her a really good actress.

Peter Dinklage is also in this film!

Spencer (2021)

Spencer is a fictional take on the real story of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ strained marriage.

I really loved the cinematography in the film, and Kirsten Stewart was incredible as Princess Diana!

Her fashion in the movie was also on point.

Minari (2020)

In search of the American Dream, a young Korean-American family moves to a rural farm in the 1980’s.

Ingrid Goes West (2017)

Obsessed with social media influencer Taylor, Ingrid goes to LA with hopes of becoming BFFs.

Ingrid Goes West is absolutely cringe-worthy and hilarious, and is definitely a fun watch in this social media age.

Apartment 407 (2016)

A pilates instructor gets lured into a photographer’s apartment, where she gets kidnapped and sold into sex slavery.

Apartment 407 is based on the experiences of Frida Farrell, who also wrote, produced, and starred in the film.

It’s a difficult and heartbreaking film to watch, but it’s powerful and it shows what’s happening right under our noses to thousands of people every single day.

Best action & adventure movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada

The Lord of the Rings franchise

This epic fantasy trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien is set in a distant past where heroes fight against evil.

3 films available on Amazon Prime Video

Spider-Man franchise (2002, 2004, 2007, & 2021)

Superheroes aren’t really my thing, but the original Spider-Man series starring Tobey Maguire was amazing.

If you haven’t seen any of the Spider-Man movies before, it’s basically a guy who gets bitten by a spider and uses his spidey senses and powers to defeat bad guys.

You can watch the first 3 movies starring Tobey Maguire on Prime Video, as well as the newest 2021 movie starring Tom Holland!

The cool thing about the newest film is that they bring back villains from the previous films, and there’s also a nice surprise.

No Escape (2015)

Jack Dwyer moves his family to Southeast Asia, and they get caught between a political uprising and riots aimed at foreign companies.

I think No Escape was one of the first non-comedy movies I saw Owen Wilson in, and I thought he was great!

Best thriller movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada

Triangle (2009)

After a storm ensues, a group of friends aboard a yacht jump onto a mysterious ship for safety.

I watched this movie without knowing anything about it beforehand, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!

It’s a really fascinating film that’ll leave you wondering what the heck really happened.

The Voyeurs (2021)

The Voyeurs is a super intense thriller about a young couple who starts spying on their neighbours across the street to the point where they become obsessed.

Sydney Sweeney and Justice Smith were both awesome and had fantastic chemistry.

I also thought it was really cool that the movie was based on Montreal!

It’s not family-friendly at all by the way, so maybe don’t watch this with your parents or your kids.

1 film available on Amazon Prime Video, watch the trailer

My Son (2021)

A divorced couple’s young son goes missing from camp, and it turns out he’s been kidnapped.

James McAvoy (young Professor X from X-Men) stars in My Son, and he’s awesome in it.

Till Death (2021)

Stuck in a stale and unhappy marriage, Emma and her controlling husband spend a romantic anniversary evening at their secluded lakehouse in the winter.

Emma wakes up to a surprise the next morning when she’s handcuffed to her dead husband, who she discovers turned it all into his own twisted game.

Megan Fox stars in Till Death, and she’s actually pretty good in it!

Best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada

I’m a big horror fan, and I’ve watched tons of horror movies on Amazon Prime Video Canada (the good, the bad, and the ugly).

I’ve included some of the best ones here, but I’ve also got a separate blog post all about the best horror movies on Prime Video, with even more great films for my fellow horror fans.

Train to Busan (2016)

Train to Busan is without a doubt the best zombie horror film I have ever seen.

While Seok-woo and his daughter are aboard a train to the city of Busan, they get trapped in the middle of a zombie outbreak.

It’s absolutely terrifying, especially since the zombies actually run fast.

The film is in Korean, so you’ll have to read subtitles, but it’s absolutely worth it.

There’s also a sequel called Peninsula, but it’s a completely different story and I didn’t love it as much as the first movie.

If you like Train to Busan, you should also watch Kingdom, a Netflix series about zombies invading ancient Korea (who also run fast), and #Alive, another South Korean Netflix movie about zombies!

A Quiet Place Part II (2021)

I thought A Quiet Place was fantastic, and A Quiet Place Part II is just as good.

19 Best Classic Movies on Netflix Canada

It’s pretty much a continuation from the first movie, and it’s super action-packed.

If you don’t know the premise, basically a bunch of alien creatures take over earth and only have the ability to hear sound to catch their prey.

Super cute thing: John Krasinksi (director and the dad in the movie) and Emily Blunt (the mom in the movie) are married in real life!

Don’t Hang Up (2016)

Two pranksters have the tables turned on them when a stranger’s prank call turns into a deadly game.

Don’t Hang Up is an interesting concept, and it’s definitely a creepy watch.

If you like the Scream franchise (the first 3 movies are on Crave), you’ll definitely enjoy it!
