Thriller movies on Crave

Old (2020)

A family goes on a tropical holiday where they discover a secluded beach that causes them to age rapidly.

The acting isn’t the greatest tbh, but it is very suspenseful and an interesting watch.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Old is based on a Swiss graphic novel titled Sandcastle.

The cinematography by Michael Gioulakis is lovely – he also did the cinematography for Shyamalan’s Split and Glass, Jordan Peele’s Us, and Servant on Apple TV+!

The Little Things (2021)

In the early 90s, a deputy sheriff and sergeant join forces to track down a serial killer terrorizing Los Angeles.

It’s more of a crime thriller than an actual horror, but there are some disturbing scenes.

Denzel Washington, Rami Malek (from Mr. Robot on Prime Video), and Jared Leto all star in The Little Things.

Spiral (2020)

A gay couple moves to a small town with their 16-year-old daughter, and things start to take a turn for the worst.

Spiral has some pretty good jump scares if you’re into that, although it’s more of a psychological horror!

Lochlyn Munro (Betty’s dad in Riverdale on Netflix) stars as one of the dads.

Fear of Rain (2021)

A teen with early-onset schizophrenia struggles between figuring out what’s real and what’s in her head when she suspects her next-door neighbour has kidnapped a little girl.

Katherine Heigl stars as the mom in Fear of Rain, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in anything other than comedies!

Stanley Kubrick Exhibition at TIFF Bell Lightbox
An exhibit from The Shining at the Stanley Kubrick exhibition inside TIFF Bell Lightbox in 2015.

The Shining (1980)

The Shining is of course one of the most iconic horror movies ever made.

Even if you haven’t seen the film before, you’ll definitely recognize some of its most famous lines and scenes.

Jack Torrance moves his wife and young son into the Overlook Hotel, where they plan on taking care of it during the winter.

His son starts to get disturbing visions as Jack starts to discover the dark secrets behind the hotel.

There’s a sequel that came out in 2019 called Doctor Sleep, but tbh I don’t think it does the original film any justice.

It’s about the son, Danny, who’s now an adult haunted by his past.

Dead Ringers (1988)

Identical twins Elliot and Beverly are successful gynecologists in Toronto.

Elliot, the more confident brother, has affairs with many of his patients, and when he loses interest, passes them onto his meeker brother without the woman knowing.

When Beverly falls head over heels for one of the patients and she deceives him, he starts to go mad.

Dead Ringers was directed and written by iconic Canadian sci-fi horror director David Cronenberg, and it’s actually based on two real identical twin gynecologists!

Supernatural horror movies on Crave

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

The Devil Made Me Do It is the third instalment of The Conjuring series, where Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate a young man accused of murder, who claims he’s been possessed.

The Conjuring is one of my all-time favourite horror franchises – the movies are actually terrifying, and they’re actually based on real people and real life cases!

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star in all three movies, and they’re fantastic together.

The Turning (2020)

Kate takes on a job as a nanny for two young orphans at an isolated Gothic mansion in the countryside.

She soon learns that the children are emotionally distant and unstable, and when strange events start to happen, she begins to suspect that a malevolent entity haunts the estate.

It’s pretty weird seeing Finn Wolfhard (Mike in Stranger Things on Netflix) play such a different role in The Turning, but he does a great job.

You Should Have Left (2020)

Strange things start to happen when a couple and their daughter rent a secluded vacation home in the countryside.

When I saw the trailer, I thought there’d be a meaning behind the age gap relationship with Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried, but it’s completely irrelevant to the story.

You Should Have Left is not a bad watch if you’re into supernatural thrillers!

The Empty Man (2021)

While searching for a missing teenage girl, an ex-cop comes across a mysterious cult trying to summon a supernatural entity.

The Empty Man didn’t get rave reviews from critics, but I thought it was overall a pretty good watch!

Creature horror movies on Crave

I Am Legend (2007)

Robert Neville is the last human survivor of a plague in New York.

A scientist before the man-made virus came to be, he attempts to create a cure using his own immune blood.

This movie freaked me out when I first watched it as a kid, especially because the zombies move really fast.

Will and his daughter, Willow Smith, both star in I Am Legend!

Come Play (2020)

Lonely Oliver spends his time glued to screens, and a lonely monster uses his devices to enter his world.

Come Play is a great thriller with a pretty good ending, and I love how they use modern technology to tell a terrifying story.

You might recognize Gillian Jacobs from the Netflix series Love!

Blood Quantum (2019)

The world gets taken over by a zombie virus, and the Mi’qmaq community of Red Crow is immune to it.

Horror comedy movies on Crave

Freaky (2020)

Freaky Friday meets Halloween in this horror-comedy.

When teenager Millie Kessler becomes the target of the Butcher, the town serial killer, they magically switch bodies with the power of a mystical dagger, and she discovers she only has 24 hours to get her identity back.

Freaky is a fun watch, and it’s suitable for even your friends who aren’t crazy about scary movies!

Kathryn Newton (Detective Pikachu and Big Little Lies) and Vince Vaughn star in this one!

The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

Brutal murders happen every full moon in Snow Hollow, and the townspeople start to think there’s a werewolf in town.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow is a pretty fun horror comedy, and while I’m not typically a fan of werewolf movies, this one was pretty good.

YouTuber Jimmy Tatro (LifeAccordingToJimmy) also stars in this movie!

Assassination Nation (2018)

Four high school girls in Salem fight for their lives after a hacker exposes everyone in town’s secrets and sends the town into chaos.

The real action in Assassination Nation takes awhile, but it’s still an interesting watch.

Tales from the Hood 3 (2020)

Tales from the Hood 3 is the third instalment of the horror anthology franchise, and I’m truly shocked I’ve never heard of it before.

In this one, a man and a little girl try to outrun something evil, and she tells him different horror stories to keep her mind off of the danger.

The stories are actually pretty unique, and they’re really well-done.

The entire franchise is also executive-produced by Spike Lee!

Slasher horror movies on Crave

Scream (1996, 1997, & 2000)

Can you call yourself a horror fan without having seen Scream?

The Scream franchise revolves around Sidney Prescott, who constantly gets chased by psychopaths in ghostface masks.

It’s definitely one of my favourite horror franchises of all-time, and you can stream the first 3 movies on Crave.

The 4th movie unfortunately isn’t on Crave, but you can watch it on Prime Video.

There’s also a 5th movie out in theatres now!

It’s the ultimate slasher franchise that never gets old or boring, and I never get tired of re-watching it.

While Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger may be the OG slasher villains, I find myself laughing too much since both franchises started in the 70s and 80s and the special effects and costumes are kinda corny.

There’s also a Netflix series version of Scream, but it’s definitely not the same or as good as the films.

Halloween Kills (2021)

As much as I love to hate on the Halloween movies, I can’t deny that I’ll keep watching them.

Halloween Kills is the latest instalment of the franchise, and they’re actually coming out with a new one in 2022.

Following the direct events of the 2018 movie, Michael Myers escapes Laurie’s trap and starts murdering people again.

Laurie reunites with a now-adult Tommy, the boy she babysat on the night Michael started his reign of terror, who leads an angry mob of vigilantes to destroy Michael.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, and Anthony Michael Hall all star in this one.

Saw franchise (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2017, & 2021)

You’ve probably heard of the Saw franchise, and it’s definitely not for everyone.

A masked man named Jigsaw tortures people in the worst ways possible, and all of the movies are pretty gory and horrifying.

They actually filmed the latest movie, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, here in Toronto!

9 films available on Crave

The Forever Purge (2021)

Part of the popular Purge franchise, The Forever Purge is about a different set of people and how they deal with the infamous Purge.

If you don’t know what the fictional “Purge” is, it’s 12 hours when almost all crime is legal, in an effort to create a ~crime-free~ world the rest of the year.

In this one, a couple works for a wealthy family, and both families have to band together to fight off a masked gang of killers on the morning after the Purge.

It definitely doesn’t live up to the original, but it’s a fun watch if you’re looking for more of the Purge world.

Solitary marine-biology student Siobhan spends a week on a ragged fishing boat with a tight-knit crew, and when a strange life-form entraps the boat, the crew members start getting a strange parasitic infection.

Sea Fever is actually an Irish film, and it’s interesting hearing some local superstitions and folklore!
