Thriller movies on Crave

Barbarian (2022)

A young woman checks into her Airbnb and realizes it’s already being occupied by a stranger.

Against her better judgement, she decides to spend the night, and soon realizes there’s more to be terrified of than an unexpected houseguest.

Barbarian is one of the most terrifying horror films I’ve seen in a really long time, and it’s quite gory, so it ain’t for the faint of heart.

Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long both star in Barbarian!

Don’t Worry Darling (2022)

A young couple live in the utopian 1950s community of Victory, an experimental company town where all the men are working on a top-secret project.

The wives of all the men enjoy the luxuries of their seemingly perfect paradise, but meanwhile something sinister lurks below the surface.

I do wish they’d explained some things more, but overall the film is a good watch!

Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pine, and Gemma Chan all star in Don’t Worry Darling.

There was actually a whole lot of controversy surrounding the film before it was released, with supposedly a lot of drama within the cast. You can Google it ’cause it’s a lot!

Black Phone (2021)

A shy but clever 13-year-old boy is kidnapped and held prisoner in a basement by a sadistic, masked killer named The Grabber.

When a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring, he soon discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims.

Ethan Hawke stars in this terrifyingly eerie horror movie, which is based on a short story of the same name.

Nope (2022)

The Haywood siblings discover something sinister in the skies above their California horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby western theme park tries to profit from the mysterious and otherworldly phenomenon.

Jordan Peele is one of my favourite directors – he’s also the mastermind behind Get Out and Us!

Daniel Kaluuya (who was also in Get Out), Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun all star in Nope.

Old (2020)

A family goes on a tropical holiday where they discover a secluded beach that causes them to age rapidly.

The acting isn’t the greatest tbh, but it is very suspenseful and an interesting watch.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Old is based on a Swiss graphic novel titled Sandcastle.

The cinematography by Michael Gioulakis is lovely – he also did the cinematography for Shyamalan’s Split and Glass, Jordan Peele’s Us, and Servant on Apple TV+!

See for Me (2021)

While house-sitting a secluded mansion, a visually-impaired former skier must rely on an army veteran living across the country to help her fight back against a group of thieves.

This is actually a Canadian film, and they filmed the movie in Ontario!

Psychological horror movies on Crave

Stanley Kubrick Exhibition at TIFF Bell Lightbox
An exhibit from The Shining at the Stanley Kubrick exhibition inside TIFF Bell Lightbox in 2015.

The Shining (1980)

The Shining is of course one of the most iconic horror movies ever made.

Even if you haven’t seen the film before, you’ll definitely recognize some of its most famous lines and scenes.

Jack Torrance moves his wife and young son into the Overlook Hotel, where they plan on taking care of it during the winter.

His son starts to get disturbing visions as Jack starts to discover the dark secrets behind the hotel.

There’s a sequel that came out in 2019 called Doctor Sleep, but tbh I don’t think it does the original film any justice.

It’s about the son, Danny, who’s now an adult haunted by his past.

Dead Ringers (1988)

Identical twins Elliot and Beverly are successful gynecologists in Toronto.

Elliot, the more confident brother, has affairs with many of his patients, and when he loses interest, passes them onto his meeker brother without the woman knowing.

When Beverly falls head over heels for one of the patients and she deceives him, he starts to go mad.

Dead Ringers was directed and written by iconic Canadian sci-fi horror director David Cronenberg, and it’s actually based on two real identical twin gynecologists!

There’s also a new series on Prime Video of the same name that’s based on the movie, and it stars Rachel Weisz as the twin gynecologists.

The Last Night in Soho (2021)

A young fashion design student mysteriously transports to the 60s, where she encounters a glamorous aspiring singer.

While everything seems all glitz and glam at the start, things turn out to be darker than they seem.

Anya Taylor-Joy is incredible in The Last Night in Soho, and Matt Smith is also great!

Supernatural horror movies on Crave

Antlers (2021)

A teacher and sheriff sibling duo discover a young student is hiding a dark secret in their small town in Oregon.

There are some pretty terrifying and gory scenes if you’re okay with that.

Fun fact: they filmed Antlers in British Columbia!

Prey for the Devil (2022)

With a global rise in demonic possessions, the Vatican decides to open more schools to train priests to perform exorcisms.

Nuns are completely forbidden from performing exorcisms, but a professor recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her.

She finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl who happens to be possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother.

Camp Cold Brook (2018)

A reality TV crew visits an infamous camp that was the site of a mass murder 20 years earlier, and they start to experience strange events.

It ain’t a particularly great watch, but it’s still a fun one, and Chad Michael Murray is good eye-candy.

The Exorcist (1973)

If you’re in the mood for an old school horror movie, you can watch The Exorcist on Crave.

It tells the story of a young woman who starts acting strangely, and a local priest believes she’s been possessed by the devil.

The film is based on a novel of the same name, which is loosely based on actual events.

Fun fact: The Exorcist is one of the most profitable horror movies ever made!

There’s actually a sequel coming out in 2023, and you can watch the trailer for it.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic horror franchise all about Freddy Kruger and his terribly creepy knife fingers.

He stalks teenagers in their dreams and kills them, ultimately killing them in reality as well.

This ’80s slasher by Wes Craven has spawned a whole franchise, with 9 movies in total.

Sci-fi horror movies on Crave

Crimes of the Future (2022)

As humans adapt to a synthetic environment where pain no longer exists, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations.

A celebrity performance duo showcases the metamorphosis of one of their organs, while a mysterious group tries to get them to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

This David Cronenberg sci-fi horror ain’t for the faint of heart, and when they say body horror, they really mean body horror.

If you can handle all the gruesomeness, then it’s definitely worth a watch.

Kirsten Stewart stars in Crimes of the Future, and she’s fantastic in it!

1 film available on Crave, watch the trailer

Infinity Pool (2023)

A vacationing couple spends a night outside the resort grounds with a mysterious couple, and the night ends in a tragic accident, leading them into further darkness.

There are quite a few ~risqué~ scenes, so definitely don’t watch this with your parents.

Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth both star in Infinity Pool, which was written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the iconic David Cronenberg’s son!

The Fly (1986)

Seth Brundle is a brilliant scientist who creates a teleportation device, and decides to test his machine on himself.

He manages to teleport himself, but unknowingly has a special guest in the pod with him.

The Fly is an 80s horror/sci-fi by David Cronenberg, and while it does feel very 80s, it’s still a good one!

The special effects are super gross, so cover your eyes if things like Dr. Pimple Popper gross you out.

Creature horror movies on Crave

I Am Legend (2007)

Robert Neville is the last human survivor of a plague in New York.

A scientist before the man-made virus came to be, he attempts to create a cure using his own immune blood.

This movie freaked me out when I first watched it as a kid, especially because the zombies move really fast.

Will and his daughter, Willow Smith, both star in I Am Legend!

Horror comedy movies on Crave

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

After a demon takes possession of her, popular and beautiful high school student Jennifer turns a hungry eye on guys who never stood a chance with her before.

While she satisfies her hunger for human flesh with the school’s male population, her nerdy friend, Needy, tries to put a stop to it.

Jennifer’s Body is an iconic horror comedy starring Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, and Adam Brody.

Assassination Nation (2018)

Four high school girls in Salem fight for their lives after a hacker exposes everyone in town’s secrets and sends the town into chaos.

The real action in Assassination Nation takes awhile, but it’s still an interesting watch.

Slasher horror movies on Crave

Scream panel at Fan Expo Canada
Scream panel at Fan Expo Canada 2015.

Scream (1996, 1997, & 2000)

Can you call yourself a horror fan without having seen Scream?

The Scream franchise revolves around Sidney Prescott, who constantly gets chased by psychopaths in ghostface masks.

It’s definitely one of my favourite horror franchises of all-time, and you can stream the first 3 movies on Crave.

You can watch the 4th movie on Prime Video, and the 6th movie is out in theatres now!

It’s the ultimate slasher franchise that never gets old or boring, and I never get tired of re-watching it.

While Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger may be the OG slasher villains, I find myself laughing too much since both franchises started in the 70s and 80s and the special effects and costumes are kinda corny.

Halloween franchise (2021 & 2022)

As much as I love to hate on the Halloween movies, I can’t deny that I’ll keep watching them.

It’s not my favourite horror franchise of all-time, but it’s still a classic.

If you haven’t seen Halloween before, it’s basically about a seemingly-invincible dude named Michael Myers who goes around killing people every Halloween.

Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends are the last two movies in the latest Halloween trilogy, and Jamie Lee Curtis stars in both of them.

2 films available on Crave, watch the trailer for Halloween Kills & Halloween Ends

Saw franchise (2004-2021)

You’ve probably heard of the Saw franchise, and it’s definitely not for everyone.

A masked man named Jigsaw tortures people in the worst ways possible, and all of the movies are pretty gory and horrifying.

They actually filmed the latest movie, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, here in Toronto!

9 films available on Crave

Evil Dead Rise (2023)

A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short when flesh-possessing demons force them into a battle of survival.

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Evil Dead Rise so much, but it was actually pretty good!

It’s also hella gory, so it ain’t for the faint of heart.

1 film available on Crave, watch the trailer

Candyman (2021)

The Candyman is a creepy hook-handed killer who terrorizes people who speak his name, and the 2021 film is a direct sequel of the 1992 movie.

Some of the actors from the original movie reprise their roles in the sequel, and Jordan Peele is also one of the writers!

The movies are also quite gory if that’s what you’re looking for.

1 film available on Crave, watch the trailer

The Forever Purge (2021)

Part of the popular Purge franchise, The Forever Purge is about a different set of people and how they deal with the infamous Purge.

If you don’t know what the fictional “Purge” is, it’s 12 hours when almost all crime is legal, in an effort to create a ~crime-free~ world the rest of the year.

In this one, a couple works for a wealthy family, and both families have to band together to fight off a masked gang of killers on the morning after the Purge.

It definitely doesn’t live up to the original, but it’s a fun watch if you’re looking for more of the Purge world.
