Amazon vs. Netflix vs. Crave
Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Crave are all great for their own reasons.
I personally find that Amazon has a lot more older movies, which I really enjoy.
The Amazon Original series seem to be geared towards an older crowd, and maybe even an American audience, but some of them are pretty good.
Netflix definitely has the best original series and more options, while Crave offers HBO, Showtime, and Hollywood blockbusters.
I’m subscribed to all three streaming services, but it all depends on your personal preference!

Best drama shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
The Handmaid’s Tale
The dystopian future nobody wants: where women are literally just baby machines.
In The Handmaid’s Tale, “handmaids” are fertile women who are forced into having children for “commanders” and their “wives”.
Women can’t read, work, or have anything of their own, or they’ll get punished (spoiler alert: it ain’t a pretty punishment).
Margaret Atwood (the writer) is a genius, and this series is definitely not for the faint of heart – it can be pretty hard to watch at times.
The interesting thing is that Atwood came out with the original novel back in the 80s, and she finally released the sequel novel in 2019!
The series has actually veered off from the book, and you can watch the whole thing on Prime Video (or on Crave).

Expats
Expats follows the lives of a tight-knit group of expats living in Hong Kong, whose relationships are fractured after a sudden family tragedy.
Nicole Kidman stars in this limited series, and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) is the director!

Hunters
Hunters is a fictional series inspired by real Nazi hunters throughout the decades.
Set in New York City during the 70s, it follows a band of Nazi hunters who discover that Nazi war criminals are trying to create a Fourth Reich in the US.
It goes back and forth between WWII and 1977, and it’s interesting learning a bit about history.

Mr. Robot
At least when it starts off, Mr. Robot is kinda like Dexter if Dexter were a hacker.
By day, Elliot works as a cyber-security engineer, and by night, he hacks felons (actually, he pretty much hacks everyone, including his friends.)
Elliot gets recruited by an anarchist named Mr. Robot to help bring down the largest conglomerate in the world, Robin Hood style.
The entire show is a wild ride, and it gets even better throughout the seasons.

The Man in High Castle
The Man in High Castle is based on a novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick, and it shows an alternate reality if the Axis powers (Germany, Japan, and Italy) had won World War II.
East U.S.A. becomes the Greater Nazi Reich, west U.S.A. becomes the Japanese Pacific States, and the area in-between becomes the Neutral Zone.
After impossible footage is found showing a parallel universe where Germany and Japan lose the war, it gives hope that the world can be different.
Set in the 1960s, it’s fascinating to watch an alternate history.
Plus, they film some scenes in Vancouver!

Nine Perfect Strangers
Nine city dwellers go on a 10 day wellness retreat, not knowing what’s about to hit them.
Nine Perfect Strangers is based on a novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty!
A bunch of big names star in this drama series on Prime Video, including Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Samara Weaving, and Luke Evans.
Melissa McCarthy’s character is def my fave of the whole series.

Little Fires Everywhere
Little Fires Everywhere is a mini-series exclusively available on Prime Video.
It’s based on the novel of the same name by Celeste Ng, and it’s set in 1990s Ohio where Ng grew up.
It shows two different families as their worlds intertwine: the seemingly perfect Richardson family, and the Warrens, a mother-daughter duo.
Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon are amazing in this series!
If you like HBO’s Big Little Lies (available on Crave Canada and also featuring Reese Witherspoon), you’ll like this show as well.

Tell Me Your Secrets
Tell Me Your Secrets is centred around three different people with their own dark pasts.
Emma once loved a dangerous killer, John is a former serial predator, and Mary is obsessed with finding her missing daughter.
Lily Rabe from American Horror Story is in this one, and she’s awesome!
It’s similar to the Netflix show Behind Her Eyes, but I personally think Tell Me Your Secrets is a lot more interesting.

Daisy Jones & The Six
This fictional documentary-style miniseries follows the rise and sudden split of a famous rock band in the ’70s.
Daisy Jones & The Six is based on a novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
You might recognize her name if you’ve read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which is actually set in the same universe!

White Dragon
After his wife’s death, a London professor with a fear of flying travels to Hong Kong to identify her body.
She’d spent half her life working and living in Hong Kong, and he discovers a complete other life she’d been living without his knowledge.
White Dragon is primarily based in Hong Kong, and it’s cool being able to pick up on and learn some Cantonese words.
Learning to speak Cantonese fluently is on my 30 before 30 list!

Panic
Every summer in a small Texan town, high school grads play a game called Panic, made up of a series of dangerous challenges, in order to earn prize money and have the chance to leave town.
It wasn’t what I expected based on the trailer, but it was still an interesting watch!
The I Know What You Did Last Summer series on Prime Video has kind of the same vibe as Panic, but I personally didn’t love it.

The Wilds
A group of teenage girls from different worlds find themselves stranded on an island, unaware they’re the subjects of a social experiment.
The Wilds starts off a bit slow, but at the end of the first episode, you’ll definitely be into it.
I definitely think season one was better than season two though!

Best comedy shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Harlem
Four ambitious best friends in their 30s balance love, life, and careers while living in New York City, where they all met at NYU.
If you’re a fan of Sex and the City (which you can watch on Crave), you’ll definitely enjoy Harlem.
Meagan Good and Whoopi Goldberg both star in Harlem!

Flack
Robyn is an American working at a London-based PR firm, and she expertly rescues her high-profile clients from potentially embarrassing situations.
While she’s a pro at her job, her life is kind of a hot mess.
Anna Paquin (Sookie from True Blood, available on Crave) plays Robyn in Flack!

Fleabag
A woman (who we only know as Fleabag) navigates life and love in London while also coping with tragedy.
You can watch two seasons on Prime Video, and there are actually only 6 episodes each!

Upload
If you’re a fan of the Black Mirror series on Netflix, you’ll like Upload.
It’s a lot more lighthearted and funny – it kind of reminds me of The Good Place (also available on Netflix).
Basically, if you have the money, you have the option of being “uploaded” into your choice of heaven when you die.
You can communicate with loves ones who are alive via video chatting and screens, and they can join you when they die.
After dying at the young age of 27, Nathan tries to adjust to living in Lake View while also having to deal with his rich and controlling girlfriend in the real world.
P.S. if you watched the OG beauty gurus on YouTube back in the day, you’ll enjoy the little cameo 😉

A woman goes on the run after a decade of marriage to a tech billionaire, who implanted a monitoring device in her brain without her knowing.
Made for Love is totally ridiculous but utterly hilarious, and you’ll definitely enjoy it if you like Upload.

Archer
Archer, a narcissistic womanizer and incompetent spy, is part of an intelligence agency called ISIS (the name changes later) with his mother, ex-love interest, and other secret agents.
It’s sort of like a workplace sitcom, but if it involved secret agents and bad guys.
There are 12 seasons of Archer, but only 10 are on Prime Video.

Fairfax
Four mischievous 13-year-olds living in LA try their best to become influencers.
Fairfax is an animated comedy series, and while it’s about teens, it’s definitely more for a millennial audience.
Instagram is the main shindig here, while IRL TikTok is more of a Gen Z thing.
Anyway, if you’re a millennial, you’ll definitely enjoy the humour.

Best romance shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Modern Love
If you like hearing feel-good love stories, you’ll enjoy watching Modern Love.
It’s an anthology series, with each episode inspired by a different true story from the New York Times’ “Modern Love” column.
They also host a podcast of the same name, and it’s one of my favourite podcasts!
It also features some well-known stars in the cast, including Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Kit Harington, and Dev Patel.
There are also four spinoffs of the show on Prime Video: Amsterdam, Mumbai, Tokyo, and Hyderabad!

The Pursuit of Love
The Pursuit of Love follows two wildly-opposite, high-society cousins as they navigate life and love.
It’s super short with only 3 episodes, but it’s definitely worth a watch especially if you enjoyed Bridgerton on Netflix.
It’s actually based on a novel of the same name!

Best action shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
The Boys
So what if superheroes lived among us, and they weren’t the good guys we grew up thinking they were supposed to be?
The Boys is based on a comic book series of the same name, and it’s oh-so-good.
It’s about a group of normal dudes who set out to expose the dark secrets of the Seven, a group of heroes that aren’t much of heroes, and Vought, the corporation that manages the superheroes.
I’m not much of a comic book or superhero person, but I actually really enjoy watching The Boys.
It’s hella gory with tons of disgusting scenes, but it’s so entertaining.
I think the show gets even better as it goes on, and Homelander is definitely one of the most terrifying villains on television!
They also film the show here in Toronto, which is pretty cool – Adam and I actually walked by them filming by the Scotiabank Theatre once!

Invincible
Adam and I started watching Invincible because he’d heard about it from people online, and we had no idea what we were getting into when we started it.
From the cover, it looks like your typical animated superhero TV show, but it’s actually super unique.
Teenager Mark Grayson starts to develop superpowers, and he tries to take after his father Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on earth.
The show is based on a comic co-created by Robert Kirkman, who also co-created The Walking Dead (available to stream on Netflix)!
It also features a star-studded cast, including Steven Yeun and Sandra Oh.
Oh, and it’s kinda gory, but it’s all animated if that helps.
If you’ve seen and enjoyed The Boys, you’ll definitely love Invincible!

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan
Jack Ryan is an up-and-coming CIA analyst who gets thrown from his desk job into actual terrorist assignments.
John Krasinksi is badass, and it’s great seeing him play different kinds of roles (like in the horror movie A Quiet Place!)

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Rings of Power is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
It follows different characters from different walks of life, from Elves, to Dwarves, to Harfoots.
Amazon bought the TV rights for The Lord of the Rings back in 2017 and committed to 5 seasons of it, which will cost around $1 billion USD, AKA the most expensive TV series ever made!
You can actually watch the original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies on Prime Video as well!

The Wheel of Time
In a fantasy world, the Aes Sedai are a powerful all-female organization that can use magic.
One of the Aes Sedai members embarks on a dangerous journey with 5 young villagers, one of which is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, and will either save or destroy the world.
The Wheel of Time is based on the novel series of the same name, which is made up of 14 books!

Carnival Row
In Carnival Row, mythological creatures try to coexist with humans after their lands are invaded by mankind.
Vignette is a fae trying to survive in this new world, and Philo is a police inspector trying to solve the gruesome murders of fae-folk.
They were both lovers during the war, and they find each other again (with lots of tension) in Carnival Row.
I really enjoyed Carnival Row, but I feel like Cara Delevingne wasn’t meant for the role.

The Vampire Diaries
Vampire Diaries focuses around the fictional town of Mystic Falls, which has centuries worth of supernatural history.
Elena Gilbert falls into a love triangle between two brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore, who both happen to be vampires.
Although Vampire Diaries started to drag on closer to the end, the first couple of seasons were actually really good.

The Originals
The Originals is a spinoff of the wildly popular Vampire Diaries series, and it’s all about the original vampire family.
There are some crossovers between the two shows in the series, which is pretty cool!

Supernatural
Brothers Dean and Sam follow in their father’s footsteps as monster hunters, and they travel across America eliminating demons and supernatural entities.
Supernatural does get a little repetitive after awhile, but it’s still a great show overall!
It lasted 15 years and 15 seasons, and it has a huge fanbase.
Jensen Ackles actually stars in season two of The Boys, and it’s nice to see him again in a major show!

Best sci-fi shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Soulmates
Would you take a test that would tell you who your ultimate soulmate was?
That’s pretty much the premise of Soulmates, an anthology series focusing on different people’s lives and how they’re affected before or after taking the test.
No matter their location, relationship status, or even sexual orientation, the test tells them scientifically who their perfect soulmate is.
It’s a super interesting and very well-done series, and it also stars some recognizable people like Bill Skarsgard and Malin Akerman!

Solos
If you’re into Black Mirror on Netflix, you’ll definitely enjoy Solos.
It’s a sci-fi anthology series with easter eggs connecting the episodes, and every episode features some pretty incredible actors, including Anne Hathaway, Uzo Aduba, and Constance Wu.
Each episode is only around a half hour, so you can easily binge all seven episodes in one sitting.
It was created by David Weil, who also created the Prime show Hunters.

The Peripheral
Set in the near future when technology has subtly altered society, a woman discovers a secret connection to an alternate reality, as well as a dark future of her own.
Chloë Grace Moretz and Katie Leung (Cho Chang from Harry Potter, which you can watch on Crave) star in The Peripheral!

Best thriller shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Death’s Game
After a lifetime of hardship, a man ends his life and is confronted by Death.
He’s tasked with experiencing death over and over again through 12 other lives in order to earn the chance to live.
We decided to try this series out after hearing so many good things about it, and we got hooked right away!
A bunch of well-known faces star in Death’s Game, including Park So-dam (Parasite), Lee Do-hyun (The Glory and Sweet Home), and Kim Ji-hoon (Money Heist: Korea and Flower of Evil).
Do be warned that there are some pretty gruesome scenes and dark themes, so it might not be for everyone.

Dead Ringers
Twin gynaecologists, Elliot and Beverly Mantle, perform ethically questionable procedures on infertile women.
There are quite a few gory and gruesome scenes, so if blood makes ya squeamish, this might not be for you.
The series is based on David Cronenberg’s movie of the same name, and I think it’s really coool that they swapped genders for the twins.
Rachel Weisz stars as both Elliot and Beverly, and she’s amazing.

Best horror shows on Amazon Prime Video Canada
Fear the Walking Dead
A prequel and spinoff to The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead tells the story of the Clark family.
Morgan from The Walking Dead crosses over into this show as well, which is cool!
I really enjoyed the first few seasons, but it started to veer off in a weird direction in the latter ones.
Anyway, still a great show if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead (you can watch all of the seasons on Netflix)!
There are 8 seasons of the show, which you can stream all of right now on Prime Video.
There’s also another spinoff on Prime Video called The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which is about teenagers growing up through the apocalypse, and tbh it’s pretty bad.

The Terror
The Terror is an AMC anthology series that combines real life history with supernatural stories, and it’s really good and definitely underrated.
Season one is a fictionalized version of the real life Sir John Franklin’s British Arctic expedition during 19th century.
Season two tells the story of life in the Japanese internment camps during WWII in the United States.
In both seasons, the characters are haunted by malevolent and terrifying entities.
The show can be pretty gory at times, so it ain’t for the faint of heart.

Them
A black family from the south migrates to California during the 1950s, and they start to experience terror from their neighbours and otherworldly forces.
Them is an anthology series exploring terror in America, and each season will focus on different stories!

The Purge
In the world of The Purge, all crimes (including murder) are legal for 12 hours once a year on Purge Night.
Some people lock themselves up inside their homes, while others eagerly wait to carry out their revenge or dangerous desires.
Each season focuses on different sets of people who end up somehow relating to one another by the end.
The series definitely isn’t as great as the films, but it’s still a good one to watch.
You can watch the newest 2021 Purge movie on Crave if you can’t get enough!

The Stand
A contagious virus accidentally gets released from a military research facility and destroys most of the human population.
Some well-known names are in this post-apocalyptic mini-series, including Alexander Skarsgård and Whoopi Goldberg!
